MEDC tour update

Today was the 4th stop on our tour in Kuala Lumpur.  We'll spend this weekend making our way to Australia for the final two stops.  So far, the events have been awesome - the organizers in each city have really pulled out all the stops to make sure that attendees (and us speakers) have a great experience.  One of my favorite parts of each stop is the speaker dinner after each event where they take us out to really nice resturaunts to get a taste of the local culture.  I'm also having a blast going out and exploring the night life in each city but I'll save those stories for more appropriate forums ;)

Unlike the Vegas event, session evals are being done on paper so it will be a few weeks before we get any formal results back but from talking to attendees, people seem to be pretty pleased.  The most common question I get asked about our new managed APIs is "Can we have these on Windows CE too?" - it's completely up to the CE team so I'm not sure what the actual answer is... but I'm interepreting the popularity of this question as an indicator that people really like the capabilities that these APIs will give them.  Awesome!

We haven't had anything go disasterously wrong yet but there have been a few mishaps along the way.  We're up to 5 pieces of luggage that have at one point or another been lost by an airline.  Random mild illnesses have been floating around our travel party but they seem to all be related to a lack of sleep - everytime I feel like I have a cold, I just sleep in the next day and then everything's fine.   The battery on my camera died in Paris and I brought the wrong cable to recharge (if you've been watching the photo blog mentioned a few days ago, this is why it hasn't changed lately).  Fortunately, Scott and Sean are filling in by taking lots of photos that will eventually get posted somewhere.

The worst thing that's happened (to me) so far is probably the second session I presented today on the new managed APIs.  About 2/3 of the way through the presentation, my laptop completely died and refused to come back on.  After the techies gave up on fixing it, a few people in the audience bailed but the rest stuck around for the ammusement of seeing me deliver the rest of the session from memory without any slides or notes.  It was quite a nerve racking experience but I spent the last 18 months working on these APIs so rambling about them for 20 minutes wasn't too hard... at least not for me - I'm sure it would have been easier for attendees if they could actually see the code snippets being described.  Magically, my laptop is somehow OK now so the slides will get posted on the MEDC Malaysia website next week for attendees to look through on their own.  Thanks to everyone who stuck through it.  Extra thanks to all the local staff in the room who were totally calm and professional while watching me bring their event down in flames :)

    Hi Robert,

Keep up the great work, I enjoyed your sessions very much (included the one where your laptop died. :) ) And oh ya, I am one of the audience that stuck around for the amusement.

Have fun with the MEDC tour.

Too bad not everyone can be on this awesome tour with your team. For those that can't make it to any of these events. Are your teams presentation materials available anywhere? The API changes look great!

    Hi Robert,
Enjoyed your presentation. Was a little disappointed when the laptop crashed but you still pulled through pretty well. Anyway I was just wondering if your slides are available for download already. Thanks.

    Hi Robert,

We are trying to migrate our CF1.0 project to Visual Studio 2005 Beta2, it is causing a lot of problems with UI - all screens have to be re-drawn with the new controls (the code seems to still work). Please let us know is there any upgrade or converion tools available.

Kinldy also provide us some information about smooth migrating techniques from older .Net CF applicaitons to .Net 2.0 CF

    Thanks

First of all, belive me: I´m not one to rant easily, but I have to say that the performance of my windows mobile 5.0 (on my axim x51v) leaves much to be desired. I hope that the you at MS understand that BT headset connection is vital in todays mobile market, all phones have had them for quite a while now and still nothing on ppc mobile.

Of course a lot can also be dependent on the hardware but looking at the amount of problems people have with (examples: Async,BT,Storage Cards) the software I am inclined to hope that somethings are done to fix them...

This is just a reminder for all MS bloggers who talk about the supperiority of the WM 5.0

And to all a good end of the year!
