Introducing the Visual Studio ALM Rangers – John Jacob

Who are you?

John Jacob (JJ), Senior Consultant with Microsoft Services (MCS).  Prior to MCS, I’ve worked in several ALM related roles in Microsoft’s product teams like Visual Studio (DevDiv: 10 years), Office Communications Server (3 years), John JacobAdvertising Platform (Bing: 2 years) and an SDET for products like Word and Windows for Workgroups (remember that?)

What makes you tick?

Where do you live?

Fairfax, VA  - my new home, after 20+ years in Seattle/Redmond, WA (my *always* home)!

Why are you active in the Rangers program?

I’ve been with the Rangers since their inception through my original Branching Guidance for Team Foundation Server contribution. Since then, I’ve realized that it’s the essential network of expertise one has to be plugged into via contributions, and more so, via the vast learning you can leverage from these awesome people.

What is the best Rangers project you worked in and why?

Hard to choose – I wrote the original Team Foundation Server Branching Guidance (along with Graham Barry and Mario Rodriguez) based on my experience managing several build/release teams at Microsoft Corporation. It was a ground-breaking, seminal endeavor, and we got lots of recognition for it.  More recently, I got the opportunity to contribute to the Build Customization Guidance and contribute towards its HOL and development of the BRDLite Template for an-out-of-the-box build customization experience based on https://tfsbuildextensions.codeplex.com/. This time though, I get a chance to work with Willy, so maybe that skews my vote towards the Build Customization Guidance Smile.
