Future in the Cloud

image These days there's a lot of talk in the industry about cloud computing. This is no different inside Microsoft. The hallways are full of "cloud talk" and "could action". I guess we will see quite some impressive announcements and products coming over the next months and beyond.

I personally believe that a company like Microsoft is perfectly suited for taking not only data but also complete solutions to the cloud for storage, compute and consumption and help making vast resources of storage and compute power available to the masses.

The Cloud is the new Grid.

Coincidentally I came across two blog posts today. The first one on the NY Times blog about how they solved their massive (4 TB) PDF file creation problem and the second on Virtual Strategy Magazine's titled "Cloud Computing: The Perfect Storm."

The NY Times article is a good read for all of us who still struggle understanding why one would perform a compute job outside her own organization. The post also shows the power such a model has. Cloud computing equalizes the opportunities for all companies, big and small.

Companies won't have to buy a large number of highly expensive computers to perform either lengthy or very resource intensive tasks on premise. Startups can start small, using cloud resources. No huge cost involved. If the idea your infrastructure grows with you. Just use a storage provider in the cloud(like S3) and your preferred cloud compute provider and off you go.

Once you read the Times post and want to learn even more, Gail Dutton's above mentioned article gives you a better overview than I could ever do.

For me the most interesting fact in the whole cloud story is the democratizing factor it has. Storage, bandwidth and compute power available for reasonable cost, to everyone, everywhere and anytime. And over time these resources will also become available all the time.
