PTC Windchill Microsoft SQL Server vs. The Competition

As documented in the Microsoft SQL Server: Improved Performance for PTC Windchill whitepaper benchmark testing results showed that some Pro/ENGINEER and Windchill 9.1 operations performed up to 88 percent faster on SQL Server 2005 than on a competitor’s database, with an average performance advantage of approximately 10 percent.

Test Performed Time SQL Server 2005 Performance Advantage (percent)

Synchronize workspace 53 -31%
Save as 225 -19%

Search 4 -50%
Combined results of all transactions 3922 -10%

These results confirm that deploying Windchill 9.1 on Microsoft SQL Server 2005 provides users with a robust database platform, enhancing the performance of Windchill and delivering on users’ strategic PLM initiatives.

That's fine if you're installing PTC Windchill for the first time but what if you're on a competitor database platform? What if you're using Oracle right now?

PTC Windchill 9.1 has the capability to take advantage of the Microsoft SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) tool (as described here on the PTC website: Oracle to SQL Migration Tools )

"With this migration capability, customers will be able to migrate to their database platform of choice without any data or functionality loss while decreasing their total cost of ownership." - PTC

For more information on the Microsoft SQL Server MIgration Assistant see the SSMA Team Blog and the download site for SSMA for Oracle v4.2

@Keyur. PTC Windchill 10.0 is the first version that runs on SQL Server 2008 and the official version is not yet released. Until the official version is released, performance metrics cannot be obtained. Typically it takes 8-20+ weeks to get tests setup, documentation written etc. I am personally hoping to see two versions done: "As Is" installed and then tuned using SQL Server Database Tuning Advisor. The latter one with some products can increase performance by 50% or more.

Hi, Do you have any performance metrics for latest releases of microsoft sql server versus latest releases of competitor mainly oracle 11g. Also if you can shed some lights on benchmark data that was used like number of users, number of objects / documents / contexts in the system...

@Ken  @Keyur What are the common tasks we need to perform to conduct Performance/Stress Testing?
