Pie in the Sky (August 26, 2011)
As Larry and I investigate OSS and device development on the Windows Azure platform, we come across lots of interesting links and do lots of reading. And, since we can’t write about everything we read, we thought we’d simply share the best of what we come across on a weekly basis. The links below are what we came across this week.
Why “pie in the sky”? Well, I liked the way it sounded for one (you can blame me if you find the name to be cheesy). But, mostly I like the irony in it. By one definition, “pie in the sky” is “an idea or plan that seems good but is not likely to be achieved.” I like to think that the links we find show that OSS and device development on the Azure platform are not only a good ideas, but are ideas that are being achieved. So, look for our “pie in the sky” posts on Fridays. Here’s our first installment…
- From DrupalCon London: Drupal and Microsoft - It's Jolly Good! Craig Kitterman from the Interoperability team at Microsoft covers highlights of Microsoft's participation at DrupalCon London. Among the highlights is Windows Azure integration for Drupal.
- Microsoft SQL Server Connector for Apache Hadoop (download). The SQL Server-Hadoop Connector CTP (CTP = beta) is a Sqoop-based connector that facilitates efficient data transfer between SQL Server 2008 R2 and Hadoop. Sqoop supports several databases including MySQL.
- Node.js, Ruby, and Python in Windows Azure: My MIX Talk. Steve Marx from the Window Azure team posted links to slides and samples he used in a presentation he did at MIX11.
- Run Ruby on Rails on Microsoft Windows Azure. Zoiner Tejada walks through what he did to help a client get Ruby on Rails running in Windows Azure.
- NodeJS on Windows Azure. Nathan Totten from Microsoft walks through a basic setup for running NodeJS on Windows Azure.
- Several projects on github:
- A simple implementation of Windows Azure Storage API for Ruby. "...inspired by the S3 gems and self experience of dealing with queues. The major goal of the whole gem is to enable ruby developers to leverage Windows Azure Storage features and have another option for cloud storage."
- A simple implementation of Windows Azure Storage API for Node.js.
- Active Record-SQL Server adapter for Ruby. A wiki article describing how to use the adapter with SQL Azure.
- There some new articles on Microsoft's Interoperability Team's AzurePHP site that highlight how to use some of the new features in the Windows Azure SDK for PHP:
