WiX Open for One Year

Today is the one year anniversary of the WiX toolset being released as Open Source to SourceForge. Since then there have been over 120,000 downloads. More importantly the community has filed 241 bugs and we've fixed almost 200 of them. The mailing list membership continues to grow and there are a number of active members answering questions that pop-up. Even more amazing, a very rich tutorial has been written to help people new to the WiX toolset get ramped up.

Honestly, I can't believe that it has already been a year. The toolset stability has improved significantly but as I look forward I still see a lot of exciting opportunities. Personally, I think the next year of the WiX toolset will be more exciting than the last.

I also want to thank all of you who have made things interesting so far and hope we can keep things interesting going forward. Oh and keep coding... I am.

I'm confused. What is the advantage of using this approach as opposed to the setup projects that already come with Visual Studio .NET??

I can think of one major advantage: you don't need to start up Visual Studio.NET to build your installers.

This won't seem like a big issue until you have the task of setting up overnight builds of the installer. VS.NET even introduced bugs into my workplace's MSI files which required manual Orca editing to make them usable, whereas WIX can run from our normal Ant builds, and works in a completely automated, GUI-less fashion. :-)

Imagine a blog entry where I provide the English transcript of a French interview about the WiX toolset and Open Source at Microsoft.
