Underwater digital photography looks fun, expensive
I completed my first four open-water scuba dives over the weekend near Sandycove, just south of Dublin. Those 4 were the training dives for the PADI Open-Water scuba diving course. So now I'm a qualified diver (of sorts!).
The scenery close to shore included a few fish, some crabs, loads of vegetation, a rare species of Budweiser Fish and an Orange-Red Traffic Cone (the female ones are more aggressive).
On my way to the first dive, I was reading SubSea, which is billed as Ireland's Diving Magazine. I stumbled across an article by Jaime Burns about Underwater Digital Photography, and the accompanying photo was of the Ikelite waterproof housing for the Nikon D70s, which I currently shoot with! (The photo above is from the Ikelite site.)
I got all excited about my imminent career in underwater digital photography until I did the requisite search and found a local shop. Alas, these housings (which are built by third-parties, not Nikon) seem to almost cost more than the camera itself.
I wonder if you can rent them, or get them second-hand somehow? To e-bay I go!
I see there's a flickr Underwater Photography group, which includes a discussion about this exact issue. I'd love to hear of your experiences shooting underwater, and whether you bought or rented any gear.

is the diving in preparation for a trip where you're going to dive?
my friend sarah and i learned to dive in 9th grade for a trip we took with her parents to the island of dominica. her parents actually bought a disposable underwater camera, so if the housing for your d70 is too pricey you always have that.
i have pictures of me posing underwater :) - Anonymous
