Team Foundation Server Beta 3, and the roadmap to TFS release

For those of you working with early releases of Team Foundation Server, Rick LaPlante offers the complete roadmap from today's feature-complete Go-Live release of TFS, Beta 3, through to both the upcoming Beta 3 Refresh, and the subsequent final version, which is due in the first quarter of 2006.

From his entry:

This release of TFS is feature complete and high quality (ready for operational deployment).  The only feature additions now will be via customer driven feedback. Several things you should know about this release:

  • This release of TFS works only with Visual Studio 2005 Release Candidate 1 that we made available to MSDN subscribers and PDC attendees last week.
  • This release is based on the September SQL Server 2005 Community Technology Preview also made available to PDC attendees last week.
  • TFS Beta 3 includes a Go-Live license as well as product support (details below).  Users may sign up for a click-through Go-Live license (which will be available w/in a couple days… still waiting for final legal approval).
  • TFS Beta 3 will not be localized into languages other than US English.
  • Anyone who "goes live" with TFS Beta 3 will need to update their server and client deployments to the TFS Beta 3 Refresh when it’s available because TFS Beta 3 will not work with the final RTM bits.  You will need the TFS Beta 3 Refresh to work with the RTM bits.

Sounds easy... we've been trying to get TFS B3 up for a couple of days now on x64. Turns out Sharepoint services needs the latest service pack which was released today (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=9C552114-DC9A-43EE-9281-B080B7C280B4&displaylang=en)

I'm downloading it now to try it out. I've heard that it no longer requires active directory... I really hope that it will work with with the domain that we are using here.

Good to know about the Sharepoint issue, I hadn't heard that yet. I've been swimming in beta stuff since PDC so, please, anyone working with Beta 3 do let us know how you get on.

After a good deal of messing around getting SQL Server 2005 and Sharepoint Services running on x64... Team Foundation Server Beta 3 installation has popped up a dialog telling me "A 64bit operating system is not supported". I knew Beta 2 was not supported on 64bit, but I thought they would have fixed this issue for Beta 3... I can't find anything on the web to confirm this further. What a mess.

Just got an email back from Rob Caron... Apparently: "AFAIK, we don't support x64 for the application tier or for single-server." [on Team Foundation Server] :(
