Mix06: Robert Ingebretsen on WPF for Designers

I just attended Robert Ingebretsen's excellent Mix06 presentation on Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF/Avalon) for Designers.

Robert worked closer to the metal than I would have expected for a talk oriented toward designers.  I believe his goal was to explain the concepts and abstractions, and make a little more transparent what's happening under the hood, even though most designers shouldn't (read: won't) be spending their days staring at XAML.

Using a useful little utility called SplitView (which is similar to XamlPad), and about 150 lines of XAML, Robert created a WPF application that presented blog entries and flickr photos using a really nice chalkboard motif.  Photos appeared as if they were taped to the blackboard, and were presented in a font, Ingebretsen Neato, that was created using his own handwriting, as written on a tablet PC!  (How'd he do that?!)

[Update: ] All notes and follow-up are now available on Robert's blog here.

The final "wow-cool!" of the demo was Kevin Moore's Dynapanel pluggable component.  By replacing StackPanel, which is used to lay out content, it added compelling, bouncy re-positioning effects for the contents of the panel.  Consider it like a plug-in for WPF - and think of what will happen when there are loads of these available out there for designers to plug and play with!
