How to Install SQL Server 2008 R2 (Express Edition)

Overview:

With the release of the SQL Server 2008 R2 November, we have simplified the SQL Server Express (all editions and package) installation process.  In this release, we have completed the following:

  1. Reduced the number of clicks by 50% when performing an install.
  2. All inputs are defaulted on Vista and above operating systems.  (many inputs are defaults on Windows XP and Windows 2003, except for the service accounts)
  3. Skip (auto advance) through the UI, meaning non-essential dialogs will still be skipped.
  4. Reduced the size of the Express basic package

Available Express editions for download:

1. Launch the package, you will then see the contents extracted to a temporary location.

2. SQL Server Setup checks to determine pre-reqs are installed. If not, you will be prompted to install.

3. The Installation Center will then launch. Click on “New installation or add feature to an existing installation” to start the Installation Wizard.

4. Accept the license terms.

5. Review the features to installed and where SQL Server will be installed. Make any changes that are necessary for your environment.

6. Review the Instance Name and change if necessary.

7. Review the credentials that will be used for the services that will be created.

image

8. Review the Authentication Mode and the administrators that will be added to the Database Engine.

image

9. Review the Error Reporting settings. We encourage you to keep this option checked, as we review the product feedback on an ongoing basic.  This helps us to continually improve SQL Server.

10. That’s it!

Thank you!!!! This is much easier! Any work done on automated installs failing alot?  We're constantly dealing with failed installs that we hvae to do a manual gui install with the same options and then it works just fine (in fact we use the same script and just remove the silent flag and just click next a bunch of times)

If you take a look at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c772467d-e45b-43e1-9208-2c7b663d7ad1&displaylang=enc, there is a package that contains the database engine and tools. I just did not include the link here...

I've seen it but I was referring to the bootstrap packages so that we can distribute easily this latest release with our applications directly from VS.

    You won't get a bootstrapper - connect.microsoft.com/.../sql-server-express-2008-r2-bootstrapper-package

Hi! I don´t know what am I doing wrong. I have Windows Vista SP2 in Spanish, but cannot install SQL Server 2008 EXPRESS R2 in Spanish. So, I tried the English (ENU) version. It installed, but never asked me for the instance or anything. And in the end I think it didn't installa any instance at all, because, although I have the Managment Studio, there appears to be no database to logon. It's all weird indeed. Thansk for any advice, like the precise link to download the actual installer. Maybe I'm just installing the Managment Studio... I honestly do not know!

Hi, I'm running Windows XP sp2 and wanted to install a few web development tools with the web platform installer...I figured I need SQL Server Express so I selected downloads for all the SQL server options. I ended up with SQL Server 2008 AND SQL Server 2008 r2. That seems to create a problem because both installation center wizards don't work correctly...keep on prompting me for folders to select and when I select it comes up with an error message saying the selected folder is not a valid installation folder. Can I remove one of the versions?Without affecting installation files of the other? How do I go about this? I have all the other requirements. Please Help

If I am not mistaken, SQL Server 2008 R2 Express is a single user license. You might want to check and confirm that on Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 release notes.

Cannot connect to (local).

BUTTONS: OK

I already re-installed it several times and each time I get the same error :( Is someone able to help me? Thanks. James Is

You have to specify the TCP Port (1433) under SQL Server Network Configuration - Protocols. Choose TCP/IP, Properties, IP Addresses tab and under IP All specify 1433 for TCP Port. I've just did it for a SQL Server 2008 R2 ITA version and it worked perfectly. Ciao, Ivano

Thanks Ivano, but I checked and the port 1433 was already set by default. Some other other idea? Thanks. James.
