Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition to drive hardware innovation

This week at MDC we launched Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. This update is all about enabling hardware innovation by introducing the following to the Windows Mobile platform:

  • Landscape orientation for Pocket PC,
  • VGA support for Pocket PC and QVGA support for Smartphone (effectively double the currently available resolutions),
  • Square screen orientation for Pocket PC, which will enable smaller devices with keyboards.

The .NET Compact Framework 1.0SP2 provides orientation change events to assist developers with adjusting to changing orientations. The Windows Mobile platform itself provides support for running current Windows Mobile applications on Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition by adding scrollbars automatically as needed after orientation changes and by pixel doubling current applications when running on the higher resolution devices.

A Resource Kit is available for download that contains whitepapers, code samples and tools for developers looking to target Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=6a34dc83-c3ce-4a4c-ab83-491fd5729551&displaylang=en.

The MPx that Bill Gates waved around in his keynote eariler this week is an example of the type of hardware innovation that Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition enables. Below is a photo of Michael Yuan and I holding one of the few MPx prototypes in existence.
