Silverlight Tip of the Day #1: Setup and Installation of Silverlight and Silverlight Tools

Silverlight Tools is an add-on package that will allow you to develop Silverlight application using Visual Studio 2008 SP1.

Click this link to install: Install Silverlight Tools RTM.

This link will take you to the Microsoft Download center where you can download Silverlight Tools RTM. This setup program will install the following components:

  • Silverlight 2 developer runtime
  • Silverlight 2 software development kit
  • KB956453 for Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and/or KB956485 for Visual Web Developer 2008 Express with SP1
  • Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and/or Silverlight Tools for Visual Web Developer 2008 Express with SP1

It also includes:

  • Visual Basic and C# Project templates.
  • Intellisense and code generators for XAML.
  • Debugging of Silverlight applications.
  • Web reference support.
  • Designer Preview
  • Integration with Expression Blend.

Before proceeding, verify you have the following requirements:

  • Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista or Windows XP.
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Standard or above.
  • Optional - Microsoft Expression Blend 2 with SP1.

Once the file downloads open the file and click the "Run" button as seen in Figure 1.1.

This will bring up setup program as seen in Figure 1.2. Follow the wizard through to completion of the setup. You will need to close all browser windows before proceeding with setup.
