Switchboard don't have your mobile number!!!
I recently got a call asking for some help at an event, the person on the end of the phone was trying to be helpful and pointed out that switchboard did not have my mobile number.
I asked did it stop you getting in touch with me? The answer was no because they put me through to your desk and luckily I have managed to reach you here.
To which I responded I am on my mobile.
This is what about Unified communications is all about - I choose where my calls go and only need to give out one number. Ideally I would not like to give out any numbers as they are irrelevant. But we have to wait a little while for that to come to fruition.
At the end of the day using Live communication server and Office Communicator I can control all my calls and where they get sent to. So if I need to work from home I can pop into communicator - forward my calls to my home number and I am up and running in my pseudo office. Outlook connects seamlessly to Exchange 2007, all my calls come to my designated number and it does not matter that I am not in the office because I never miss a call, IM or email.
