Now that I've changed my OneNote dogfood configuration, it's time to test a little with it

  • Last week I tangentially mentioned the affect one of the drivers in OneNote had on my dogfood configuration. I have changed my regional settings to show Japanese characters by default. This was at the behest of our "International Driver" in OneNote.

  • In this context, drivers in OneNote generally act as an intermediary between the OneNote test and the rest of Office. We do this to help prevent duplication of testing efforts on each team. For instance, since Office is supported on the same set of languages for each application, we don't have to have each team generate an entire international test plan for each application. Instead, Office publishes a test plan for supported languages and details (as much as possible) the overall guidelines for testing each language, creates a timeline for each testing effort, provides training for any new support considerations for each new release and coordinate and track all the individual applications. For OneNote, our driver meets with the Office team and then details a specific test plan for OneNote. She will, in turn, explain the relevant parts of the Office plan to us and help us create test cases for our areas that deal with specific international issues.

  • For instance, OneNote has the "Insert Date/ Time" feature. You can try this yourself by typing ALT+SHIFT+T to get the current time, or SHIFT+ALT+D to get the date. Now that I've changed my settings to Japanese in the control panel, I should get that specified date format. Here's what my control panel says I should see:

  • The big differences to me are that the time field does not show AM or PM and the short date format is Year, Month, Date format. Trying this shows 7:23 for inserting time, and 2009/02/09 for date. So far, so good!

  • Next, though, I'm going to "act like a tester" and modify the control panel settings. In the regional settings dialog, I'm going to click "Customize this format" and change the separator characters. For the short date format, I want to try some different slashes, like this:

  • And for time, I want to replace the colon character with a pair of dashes:

  • So now this is what I would expect to see in OneNote and every Windows application that correctly implements the system Date/Time settings:

  • Quick test: First, SHIFT+ALT+D to insert today's date.

  • 2009\02/09 --- this is expected.

  • Now I'll click the Insert Menu and choose Date and Time:

  • OK, it looks funny, but is exactly what I expected to see. I'm going to reset them back to the Japanese defaults and keep my eye peeled for date and time formats in OneNote.

    Segway a little - how can I get the time stamp to insert on each note that I enter?  I often simply create a new page so that I have a timestamp for when the note was taken.  Can't this occur as MetaData for each note?

    Why not just hit Ctrl+Shift+F before each entry so that the Date and Time appears before you start typing your notes.
