More machines arrive
Another fun day to come to work. This is a photo of the office of the person that orders our new hardware:
Apparently, there was just too much to fit into the hallway like last time. If you look way back at the left, you can see a desk. You can't actually get to the desk since all the computers are in the way. It’s always just amazing to see this much cool new hardware waiting to be used!
Now, back to working on SkyDrive. I’ve created a shared notebook there that we’ve been using to both test the system and track some (literal) running goals as some of us are thinking about another race or two this summer. If you haven’t hopped over there to check out Web OneNote, please do!
Questions, comments, concerns and criticisms always welcome,
John

What's the story behind the OneNote web app not showing ink? I can understand it not editing ink, but not showing ink? Seriously? Did someone forget to test that? :)Anonymous

John, Since you're the expert Onenote user at Microsoft- do you know if Skydrive is going to accept larger files than 50MB anytime soon? A fair number of my Onenote sections are 75-100MB, and I would really like them to work correctly with the new Web App. Pass that along if you can! ThanksAnonymous

Ink in the web client: The web client is actually a separate team (with whom we work closely). I'm not able to comment on their schedule or when they may be planning to add that. >50MB on SkyDrive - working on it. Stay tuned! And if you want, please contact me via email link at the upper right. I'd like to ask some questions about file sizes for your notebooks and other questions like that.Anonymous

I had to break apart a section into a couple sectoins to get around that 50MB limit. I embedded a couple big files, which seems to have been the trigger there. Kind of annoying, but it's workable for now. Looking forward to a long term fix for that, though, as when I document installations of servers, that can include a crapload of screenshots, logs, and more... Two non-critical issues with SkyDrive. I have one notebook that refuses to show 'green' in the sync status. It always says "not connected." Yet, whenever I make a change, I see it swirling away and the content does get updated online. Second, sometimes I click on a hyperlink in OneNote, it decides to open the SkyDrive page in Internet Explorer instead of just jumping to the location in OneNote. Annoying! the thing is, I can't figure out how to trigger it. It works most of the time, but sometimes when i create a "link to this page/paragraph" it just refuses to link to OneNote and instead links to SkyDrive.Anonymous

JohnGuin - I will look the next time it happens, if it happens again. It's been behaving itself today! I rebooted my computer yesterday. Until then, I had not rebooted since I uploaded the notebook to SkyDrive. Maybe that's part of the problem. Or maybe even rebooting isn't necessary and just restarting OneNote. LOL I don't envy your job. Thinking of all these little nuances for bug testing gives me a headache. ;-) I need to download the notebook at home... Maybe it will happen again. I shall report if a problem occurs!!Anonymous

JohnGuin - It's happening again. I think I figured out what I'm doing to cause it. Okay, so I right clicked and selected both "copy link to page" and "copy link to paragraph" from within OneNote. Then I select some text in another page and press CTRL+K which opens the create hyperlink dialog. If from here I paste, I get a link like this... cid-3fc6c6402e760900.office.live.com/edit.aspx...[Cropped] So then that link takes me to IE when I click on it. BUT, if I paste in OneNote somewhere else, it pastes the title to the page, and the link works correctly (prefixed with OneNote:...). I'm using the Office Clipboard Manager if that might have anything to do with it. Before syncing to SkyDrive, it always worked.Anonymous

What you are seeing is the design - if you use an http:// url (which the Hyperlink dialog accepts) then the browser handles it. If it is a OneNote url, OneNote will handle it. While this is the designed behavior, clearly we can possibly be a bit smarter about the URL we use from the hyperlink dialog. Let me investigate. And the workaround here is to paste the URL into OneNote, then copy ONLY the OneNote URL back to the clipboard before using the Hyperlink dialog. Not pretty, but should unblock you.Anonymous

Oh, and I should add that I cannot reproduce the behavior you are seeing. When I copy the link to a paragraph or page from within OneNote, the Hyperlink dialog always uses the onenote: link. Can you try without the clipboard manager?Anonymous

woah!! whose office is this??!! :)Anonymous

Thanks for the info, John. I appreciate your help greatly! I thought I just tested incorrectly before but since you can't repro, I'm thinking I did it right when I first tried to repro... Which would mean it's intermittent. Very possible that Clipboard Manager might be involved. I'll try disabling that and see if I can go a whole day without the issue. I will report back. :-)Anonymous

Disabled the clipboard manager; Quit OneNote; Started OneNote; Sitll having issue. Quite odd... I wonder what I'm doing differently? I'm also a little frustrated at having to enter my password for protected sections, but I do understand why that would be the case. I was using Mesh before to sync my notebooks and it was a dream!! Since Mesh is changing to Live Sync, I decided to give the built-in cloud sync a try. I liked the idea of the 25GB of storage on SkyDrive and directly syncing in OneNote. But it doesn't seem "ready for primetime" to me yet. There are little issues, like the hyperlinking and incorrect icon. But also bigger issues like entering password, and syncing seeming to fail more times than succeed, necessitating a manual sync (does it retry on an interval? I don't know -- it doesn't tell me). I might have to switch (back?) to Live Sync though just because this is getting frustrating. The only thing I worry about is the 2GB limit. I do appreciate all the help, though!Anonymous

Can you give me a step by step for how you are copying the link with as many details as possible? For instance, here is what I am doing that does NOT reproduce the problem:
- Start OneNote
- Open a notebook hosted on SkyDrive
- Go to any page in the notebook
- Right click the page tab and select "Copy link to page"
- navigate to a separate page
- Highlight any text on the page and hit CTRL+K
- Paste the hyperlink from the clipboard into the dialog At this point, the URL is consistently preprended with the onenote: protocol If I vary step 4 to be "Select some text on the page, right click and 'Copy link to paragraph'" I get the same behavior. There must be a difference between your steps and mine.

And just like that, I "got a repro." Trying to figure out what changed and why I can't hit it 100% of the time. Thanks for pointing this out.Anonymous

Hey happy to help break things! Good luck with that!
