The appliest place on earth

I never used to get the "apple" thing here. What's the big deal; they're just apples. And you have to cut them up to eat them or they just drip down your hands and make you all sticky and messy. I remember how weird I used to think a girl in my sorority was because she had her parents send her apples from Seattle. Now I totally get it. Because those things they call "apples" at your store, those are just the ones that aren't good enough for Seattle. I am sorry that it has to be this way. It's really not very fair to you.

I've finally, really gotten into apples, especially at this time of year. I can't wait to go into Whole Foods and buy me a big bag and eat them all myself. Incidentally, I am going to have to have the granny smith tree in my front yard taken out soon. It's not doing well. But I really didn't eat those ones anyway. My favorite apples are called honeycrisp and they are kind of expensive but they are totally worth it. And I just ate one. And actually, you can find them in Minnesota and Wisconsin, I am sure. But I tend to think the ones in Seattle are better :) Seriously, for anyones who likes stuff made with apples but never got into eating them rawy, you should give these a try.

I feel like such a Seattle-ite getting into the apples now. But I am still going to complain about the early darkness and peoples' inability to merge into traffic.

New York state has honeycrisp apples as well. Some of them are the size of a softball.

Hmmm... so THAT'S why I've never thought much of apples... they're not like that in Nebraska.

Traffic merging  (and the endless gray skies) - two things I have never accepted about my new home. Can't change the weather but really people, it's ok to merge, you won't offend.

Great post! And you just let out a big secret too. For we just moved to Oregon and "discovered" fresh HoneyCrisp apples too...now our favorite.  Mmmmm.

/Start Rant I just wanted to +1 about people not being able to drive around here. Maybe it's because I am from Detroit (The MotorCity if you will), but what is up with the driving around here? People really do not know how to merge onto freeways, or exit off of them. Oh yea, and the Apples are delicious here. So is the Sushi. Way to go Seattle. You'll still never beat the simplicity of a lunch at a Detroit-Area Coney Island and our spacious freeways. Trying to keep it more or less on topic, lol. :-) /End Rant

I am visiting the Seattle area at this time, so I purchased a (very large) HoneyCrisp apple, based on your advice.   Wow!   We don't have those in Hawaii... Which Whole Foods do I prefer, Redmond or Bellevue?   I guess it depends on which is closest to where I happen to be!   Shopping in either hasn't lost its sparkle, as flying has... Tomorrow it's back to Hawaiian pineapples for the time being (we don't have the Costa Rican variety, either!)

egcarter - glad you got to try them. I am jealous about all the pineapple you get over there. I love pineapple and buy those big, overpriced tubs of it cut up at Whole Foods. If I have a lot of staples to buy, I usually go somewhere else and go to WF for the prepared stuff, veg and whole wheat stuff (which frankly is most of the time).
