905806 Outlook Mobile Access devices cannot connect to an Exchange Server 2003 server by using the WAP gateway of a telephone carrier

Source: https://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;905806&f=11

When you try to connect to the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 server by using the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) gateway of a telephone carrier, the Microsoft Outlook Mobile Access devices cannot connect.

Additionally, you receive an error message that is generated by the WAP gateway of the telephone carrier.

CAUSE
This behavior occurs because the WAP gateway of the telephone carrier does not trust the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate for the user who issues the SSL certificate.

RESOLUTION
Use one of the following methods to resolve this behavior:

  • Send a request to the telephone carrier. Request that the WAP gateway of the telephone carrier trusts the SSL certificate for the user who issues the SSL certificate.
  • Issue a new SSL certificate for the Exchange Server 2003 server. Make sure that the user who issues the SSL certificate is trusted by the WAP gateway of the telephone carrier.

STATUS
This behavior is by design.

Additionally, this behavior is part of the design that makes SSL channels secure.

MORE INFORMATION
This behavior may also affect the Outlook Mobile Access users who use a direct connection to the Exchange Server 2003 server.

To resolve this behavior for these Outlook Mobile Access users, configure the clients to trust the SSL certificate issuer who issues the certificate.
