    @William Since I don't have access to my own system right now, I can only tell you it's Windows XP SP3. It doesn't matter, which IE version is installed, the installation of AR 9.x "captures" the registry key mentioned above in all cases (and causes the installation of a "higher"/greater IE version to fail). IE6 -> AR 9.x -> IE7/IE8 fails IE7 -> AR 9.x -> IE8 fails I'm not 100% sure, that the same applies for Windows Vista. Uninstalling AR 9.x and rebooting Windows afterwards seems to "fix" the issue in most cases. Bye, Freudi

    Just one addition: The language of Windows (XP) doesn't matter in this case. I could repro the issue even in the IE8-Test VHD.

    Hi Sam.

  1. Can you Zip the %windir%ie7.log and %windir%ie7_main.log files and send them to fixit4me@microsoft.com (Subject: ATTN:WilliamK) so we can investigate why this Fix it didn't work for you?
  2. When you reset security to defaults, standard user accounts are removed from the Users group. As a result, they don't show up on the log on or switch users screen. To fix this, youc an just add those users back to the Users group. I have updated this blog post with information about how to do that.

    IE8 Seems to not lo me into my myspace yahoo classmates etc. It's terrible. and fix it doesn't and won't work.

    @Ottmar This problem should not occur in the final release of Internet Explorer 8. Also, this Fix it solution should solve this problem as well. So if yo tried our Fix it and it didn't reset the permissions on that key, we'd like to get more information so we can improve our solution.     Let me first thank and congratualte you for providing this useful FixIt! tool. But it doesn't help those who are having Adobe Reader 9.0 or 9.1 installed and want to install IE7 or IE8! The Adobe Reader 9.x setup removes the Full Permissions right for the Administrators(!) group for the registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTInterface{34A715A0-6587-11D0-924A-0020AFC7AC4D} That's why the installation of IE7 or IE8 will fail in case Adobe Reader 9.x has been installed in front of IE7 or IE8. Any chance to include the fix in your FixIt! tool? TIA, Freudi

    @William It's correct that the installation of IE8 RTM completed (to my surprise) although the permissions of the registry key mentioned above didn't have the Full Permissions for the Admintrator group. Of course, the "IECUSTOM: Unwriteable key HKCRInterface{34A715A0-6587-11D0-924A-0020AFC7AC4D}" entries are still present in the ie8.log file. This has been an upgrade from IE8RC1 to IE8RTM on a virtual PC. I'm doublecheking the possible Fix it issue right now on another machine and will provide the infos you may need per mail, if I can confirm the possible issue. Bye, Freudi

    Note: Version 1.1.1 of this Fix it is now available to address the issue where Limited Users / Standard Users do not appear on the Windows XP Welcome Screen or Windows Vista Logon screen or in Control Panel - Manager user accounts.

    Thanks William for working with me on the issue I've been seeing on the official Microsoft VHD. To summarize: The Fix it tool works as expected, my findings were based on the official Microsoft VHD (Windows XP SP3 with IE6), in which the "secsetup.inf" is missing for whichever reason. Without a "secsetup.inf" in the %windir%repair folder, the reset of the permissions for the registry and files isn't possible. Bye, Freudi

    Wondering if you could mod your tool so that it could be used on another disk. For example a disk that was damaged by improper acl mods and will no longer function correctly. By installing the disk in a working machine and running your utility against that disk from that machine's functioning windows instance.

    There is a way to fix permissions on another HDD. What I did was download the FixItForMe self installer and save it to the drive that needs fixing then run from the browser I downloaded it on. Works!

    I ran this hoping to fix an error with Adobe Acrobat constantly running the last bit of installation every time I right click.  It didn't seem to do the trick as it's still continuing to "configure" the installation.  It doesn't seem like I have all the permissions in the registry to allow it to finally finish its installation.

    I just fixit on my PC and now I cannot start SQL Server on my PC which was running fine before that. Every time it says "Access denied". I fixed the access to give access to every one on everything but still error. Is there anybody to help me? I tried to upgrade sql server but still useless.

    I can't seem to find a fix it for my two problems with my Win XP Home Dell PC.

  1. I can't seem to get my desktop icons to stay on my desktop. When I boot up, NO Icons appear. My Internet service connects automatically. If I let it continue to connect it will but still with no icons. But before it completes connecting, if I close it, all my desktop icons appear.
  2. When I go to play a game in any web site, before the game opens, my explorer is shut down and I find myself back to the desktop. After investigating all through the help sites I think it's a damaged Shockwave ActiveX Control. I did a search and found the programs. They are damaged. Where do I get new ActiveX Controls installed? Thank You Carol Pereski

    Seems that there is a problem with running Windows installer scripts and thereby causing problems with running certain uninstaller scripts. Ran this util but still having problems with reinstalling Windows Scripting or uninstalling Adobe Air. Wished this app would provide further information if it failed.

    I ran the reset Fix-It hoping it would fix several access-denied issues with IE7 (running on XP SP3). Unfortunately, it did not fix the problem, and it deleted one of the user accounts on my machine. I would at this point be grateful for info that would get my account restored. Thank you for time, patience, and dedication.

    I have lost or forgotten my pass word to sign on to the admin accout and can only get on this computer using the "Guest" Account.I tried the Automatic Fix but it came back with a message that I needed to be signed in as administrater.

    Many thanks to Ottmar Freudenberger who found the real solution to the real problem. Just uninstall Adobe Reader 9.0 and your install of IE7 will succeed. You can re-install Adobe Reader 9.1 afterward and both will work OK (IE7 & AR).

    this fix did not help me my firewall is still disabled and greyed out - under control of 'group policy' - no idea what this is or why I have it. this is a home computer not networked (apart from small home wireless network) running XP home SP3

    I only have a blue square when I open outlook express 6.  It goes no where. when I go over it with the arrow it shows an hour glass.  Any screen that gets put over it gets taped on the blue screen, when I closes the screen on top of outlook.

    My automatic updates wanted me to install IE 8 and I capitulated.  When it went south the first time, I came here, tried fix it, no luck.  Then Uninstalled Adobe 9, uninstalled IE8, Reinstalled IE8, and it still doesn't work.  I use Firefox typically, but some web sites don't work with it, only with IE, so I need it and now I don't have it at all.

    Used this fix to upgrade to IE8 and worked fine. But now I have other computers (laptops) that run Vista cannot access this XP (SP3) machine. Have checked all setting, checked NetBIOS by pinging each machine. The computer appears on the Vista laptops but "you do not have permission to use network resourse" error appears. I have searched the internet but nothing works. Any ideas? (please)

    To install IE8 I runned Fix it. IE8 is installed without a problem then. BUT, after this Fix it procedure, other pc's can not enter the main pc in the network. Suddenly you have to enter a username and password to obtain the connection. What do I have to change to avoid this?

    To Fearny, first install service pack 3 for xp (with help from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en) and then Explorer 8. It worked for me. Good luck.

Perhaps someone should have made it clear that the tool can be downloaded from either of the above 'Solve Internet Explorer x installation problems' links or put a separate link called 'Reset Windows security settings back to defaults' and point it directly to the download for the Fix It Tool 50189 file (MicrosoftFixit50198.msi). For anyone who just wants download the file, copy and paste the following link into your browsers address bar. It will automatically prompt you to either Run or Save it:- go.microsoft.com

    I have a notice that constantly comes up when I am playing Castleville on Facebook. It says there is a script running and if it continues to run it will cause Internet Explorer to run slow or possible quit  working at all.
