Download the Preview of the Deep Zoom Composer

One of the slew of new things that is being released at MIX today is the Deep Zoom Composer powertoy:

dzcSplash

If you have followed the Silverlight 2 Beta 1 announcements, Silverlight 2 includes support for the Deep Zoom technology to allow you to quickly and smoothly zoom in on really large images. If you want to see an amazing implementation of the Deep Zoom technology, check out the Hard Rock Memorabilia site: https://memorabilia.hardrock.com/

What is the Deep Zoom Composer?
Deep Zoom Composer allows you to quickly import your own images, arrange and position them to your liking, and export the final output as either a Deep Zoom Image or Collection that can be fed into Silverlight's MutliScaleImage control. This means that you too can use your own images and display them using our Deep Zoom technology.

Because we are currently at MIX, we haven't had  a chance to write a detailed post outlining all of the cool things you can create. Rest assured, we'll be explaining more about this application in future blog posts, but until then, feel free to try this out and let us know what you think.

Cheers!
Celso, Janete, Kirupa, and Lutz

FYI: In case you are curious, Deep Zoom is related to the SeaDragon technology that we have been demoing in our PhotoSynth application for a while.

Will this control work on WPF too? Have you made the pan / zoom modular so that you can zoom in on any visual?  Does it have to be an image?

Joe - this control doesn't exist for WPF, so you can only use it in Silverlight. The pan / zoom hasn't been made modular, but if you are looking for a general pan/zoom solution, you could modify a ScrollViewer control to do so. The actual pan / zoom used by Silverlight's MultiScaleimage control dynamically loads and discards images to make sure unnecessary visual data isn't sent. That is more difficult to do for non-image based content :)

Is there any way to create a Deep Zoom with transparent PNG? If not, Do you have a plan for support it?

Wow, this is excellent! Do you have any plan to support another image format (ex. png) when it exports. Thank you!

Hi, I tried out the Deep Zoom Composer on a smallish BMNG image and it worked fine. However, every time I attempt a real image BMNG1.jpg 24.9Mb 21600x21600 the import shows the correct file size 24.91Mb but Dimensions1x1 with no view and nothing to export? Does anyone know size limitations for Deep Zoom Composer?

I did not get the point of this app. I imported 4 images and compose one with them and when i exported the project it created 10 folders 6 of them empty and the other had each of them one on my pics... i also exported a collection but don't know how it works.. the guide i downloaded also doesn't have enough information.. i also say hard rock cafe web site... did not get it...

Ivana - check out the example here: http://blogs.msdn.com/expression/archive/2008/03/09/deep-zoom-sample-with-mousewheel-pan-click-zoom.aspx The point of the Deep Zoom Composer is to allow you to create the tiled/zoomed images easily for use with the Deep Zoom feature in Silverlight 2. Cheers! Kirupa :)

This is interesting, but only just the beginning. From a geo-IT / web mapping solutions perspective, you'd want to be able to convert  either a single very large image (we're talking gigabytes) or an already existing cache of map tiles to the Deep Zoom file / directory structure. This seems not too hard to do, except for the .bin file, which seems important because the Silverlight control points to it. How about shedding some light on this binary file - tha t would be most welcome.

I've been playing around with this quite a bit but it always seems to degrade my images.  Also, why have an option to import different file formats when DZC changes then into JPGs anyway?  And surely there should be a manual compression setting? Cool bit of kit though...
