FAQ: When does mainstream support end for SQL Server 2000?
Thanks to Peter Kalbach internally for this link. Now you will have to be on SP4 for this to be the case as support for SP3a is being retired on July 11 this year.
The internal question was driven by this blog link which is obviously wrong based on the above :-) Reading the clipped news article through as far the "quote" from BillG should have been a sign that this article might not be on the level...

And we all thought that the GA release for SQL 2005 was 11/7/2005. How did they come up with the date in January, 2006? - Anonymous

I believe thats the true definition of general in GA. SQL Server actually RTM'd Oct 27th (or so my plaque says), if you were an MSDN customer you could get it then. The launch was Nov 7, however there was not product in the channel until Dec/Jan in english and Jan/Feb in other languages.
