Security updates for XP Embedded released as .img file

Since September the monthly security updates for XP Embedded have been released in the form of a single CD image (.img) file. This is done in an effort to streamline the release process and to drive consistency across Microsoft. I know this might be painful, since you have to use a tool to access the updates in the .img file. But it does get the update to you faster!

You can mount the image as a virtual CD image or use it to create a physical CD. The resulting virtual CD image or physical CD will contain three folders – one called Documentation (containing additional information documents for the componentized updates), one called Windows (containing the SP1, SP2, and FP2007 specific componentized update rollup packages) and a third called DQI (containing the Windows XP Professional updates for the current month). The list of updates contained in the rollups, along with the components they affect, can be found in the Critical Update Catalog spreadsheet. The list of updates contained in the DQI folder can be found in DQI specific Critical Update Catalog spreadsheet.

There are several third party tools (ISO image burning tools) available that can be used to convert the .img file into a virtual CD image or physical CD. An example tool is “ISORecorder”, available at https://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm. This tool can be used to burn ISOs directly to a CD-R or CD-RW disc.

Try out Daemon Tools (http://www.daemon-tools.cc/) to mount an image as a virtual drive instead of wasting a CD.
