New version of SMS is available
The SMS (Systems Management Server) team has released their latest SMS version (SMS 2003 SP1 Advanced Client) in component form for use with XP Embedded clients in a network that utilizes SMS Server 2003. It can be downloaded from here.
The SMS install package imports one sld (and its related file resources) into the XP Embedded database. The sld contains a number of components, two of which are macro components- one points to all the pre-requisite components for enabling SMS client and the second one points to the SMS SP1 Advanced Client components themselves. Adding both these macros to your configuration and running check dependencies will bring everything you need into your configuration. There are also a number of SMS MUI components included in the sld.
NOTE: If the repository folder {41B0394B-74D8-4CFD-86C0-BDCE45CE4728} does not already exist on your Embedded development machine (under "Embedded Embedded Data\Repositories") then Q811279 needs to be installed in order to create this repository folder before attempting to install the SMS package.
This version of SMS enables the ITMU (Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates) to scan the machine using the Windows Update agent and detect any applicable updates. This report will be sent back to the SMS Site Server using Hardware Inventory. At that time the SMS admin can view, download, authorize and advertise these updates for distribution using the DSUW (Distribute Software Updates Wizard). When scanning the XPe client it should only find the updates that pertain to it and NOT all XP Pro updates. As with all SMS distribution the SMS administrator has full control of what updates get applied to machines in the network and how those updates are packaged for distribution.
