New MSDN Subscription for Windows Embedded and More…

If you missed the Embedded Systems Conference in Silicon Valley this week, you also missed an industry address from Kevin Dallas, the General Manager for the Windows Embedded group. In that address, he highlighted three new offerings related to Embedded, that aligned with our commitment of delivering a Windows Embedded Software + Services platform for connected experiences. These new offerings are:

1. Windows Embedded Server: As customers expand from building client devices to delivering end-to-end Embedded Systems that go from sensors to servers, their requirements of our software platform also expand.  To this end, we announced the newest member of our Windows Embedded product family, Windows Embedded Server.

2. Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Embedded Subscription: To help our professional developers deliver their next generation of embedded devices successfully, we announced the availability (as of July 1) of Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition with Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Embedded subscription.  This offering provides developers and our global partner ecosystem with a cost-effective way to license the entire line of Windows Embedded platforms and tools, receive technical support, and obtain early access to the latest Microsoft updates and resources.

3. Windows Embedded Developer Update Service: MSDN Embedded subscribers will also have exclusive access to a new developer service called Windows Embedded Developer Update. This new service will deliver the latest technology from Microsoft and trusted 3rd parties directly into the Windows Embedded development environment.  The service integrates a client on the developer’s machine to a cloud service hosting the content, such as Microsoft product updates, advanced technologies, trusted 3rd Party drivers, and board support packages (BSPs).

For more information on any of these you can speak directly with your distributor. Feel free to check out the official press release as well.

So, the new MSDN Embedded Subscription, how does it compare to the close Visual Studio Professional with MSDN Professional?  I do not see SQL Server listed, anything else?  Or is that included as well too, for those with SQL Server installations for the WES DB?

Kris, The MSDN Embedded subscription does not include SQL Server. MSDN Professional doesn’t have Windows Embedded and does have SQL Server. The next level up includes both (MSDN Premium). For all details see this link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/subscriptionschart.aspx Lynda

Joseph- just to clarify, are you referring to the MSDN Premium RETAIL subscription? Lynda

I am in the same situation as Joseph.  We have MSDN Premium with Visual Studio Team Edition that we get through our volume license agreement.  So I guess we do not have the retail edition.  I asked our MS rep and he said something about a 'legal issue' and the embedded content not being available to us until October?  I sure hope not!

I just heard from another Microsoft contact of mine that this is now available through MSDN Premium, and sure enough it is.
