How Do I Stay Up To Date?

A number of partners and customers have expressed confusion over knowing how to ensure their database is up to date with the latest security updates- especially if they are installing the product from scratch. Often communications refer to updates as "being rolled" into other updates- what does this mean?

Essentially it means that every new database security update release includes any and all previous security updates....for that product version. Note that by database update I mean the componentized updated that get applied to your XP Embedded database, not the XP Professional updates that are for consumption by the Desktop QFE Installer tool (DQI). So, if you are building a new SP2 database, after installing SP2 you can go to the ECE site and grab the most recent security update package for SP2 (currently this is Oct07) and apply this to your SP2 database and you will be up to date.

In addition, every new product version we release includes not only all the latest and greatest features for that new version but also includes all the security updates that were released for the previous product version up until the date that the new product RTM'd (Release To Manufacturing). NOTE: the RTM date is not the same date that the product actually gets into customer's hands as there is a delay as it works through the distribution channels- what this means is that another set of security updates may be released while the new product version is still in the distribution channels. These security updates will be picked up in the very first security update package that is targeted at the new product version.

In practice this means that if you are wanting to install the most recent product version from scratch (Update Rollup 1.0) you can install SP1, SP2, FP2007 and Update Rollup 1.0 and then apply just the most recent security update package from the ECE site for Update Rollup 1.0 (Oct 2007) and you will be up to date.

To be thorough I must mention that not all updates that were released for XP Embedded were security updates so they will not be part of the latest security update releases. These are usually things like fixes for and Embedded Enabling feature or some other fix that is specific to Embedded and is not part of the Windows XP Professional fixes, or an out-of-ban feature like the .NET 2.0 component for SP2 released in July 2006. If you want an available non-security update for your product version you would have to install that separately.
