First Day of MEDC China 2007

I feel great that I finally finished my 1st day of MEDC China. You won't believe that I actually did 2 presentations (one on XPe Intro and one on XPe Future) and 2 instructor-led labs (Componentization E2E and XPe Intro) in a row this afternoon, plus the keynote demo in the morning.

In that keynote demo, quite a few colleagues from US went up stage. They most managed to at least say "hello" in Chinese which is "Ni Hao". Derek and I sat next to each other. He had to go on to the stage a few times, so I helped him quickly pick a few other phases in Chinese, such as "Wo You Lai le"(meaning "I am back again") and "Wo San Jing Gong le" (meaning "I am here the 3rd time").

Luckily, in the demo of XPe, I had the time luxury to talk about what XPe is at a very high level, the end-to-end XPe development process, and then show them how to use Target Designer to build the image that supports the Crate & Barrel Kiosk Application created by Clarity Consulting that was demoed in MEDC US as well. Another thing I added in the demo is to show you can easily add the local language support through adding components.

Surprisingly at the begining of the last session, I was still able to speak out loud, didn't lose my voice. I guess I was just so excited to see so many attendees in my sessions. Probably around one hundred people, with a few more standing at the back. I guess my keynote demo help

ed to draw people's attention. I actually stayed up last night, prepaing the demo, doing the final translation of the decks to Chinese and got up early this morning to do a final rehearsal. I am so happy the efforts paid off with the big turnout. Most people stayed the whole sessions, came to the podium asking questions, retrieving my business cards. One of the most asked questions after the XPe intro session was "how to port my image across different platforms, say from Intel x86 to ARM? who takes care of that?". Well, I had to tell them XPe is only supported on x86, very similar to XP Pro (though XP Pro has a 64-bit version that I used to work on).

The Introductor-led labs went well. The organizers did a very good job. Everything worked out. I will have 4 more lab sessions tomorrow (2 repeating today's and 2 on FBWF). But I feel much more relaxed than last night. One thing MEDC China doesn't have compared to MEDC US is the Expert Cabana. I would recommend this for future events.

Dinner was in a Beijing Duck restaurant with Ning, a local System Engineer who did the USB boot session, and John/Yolanda, the Marketing folks in APAC area. We talked about building up the Chinese community site, engaging more local training parnters, publishing more XPe articles in Chinese media etc. It's good to find colleagues who share the same passion for our customers and really take actions. In case you don't know, Beijing Duck is the most famous dish of this city. Don't miss it if you visit Beijing.
