Embedded Processor Survey

Here’s an interesting survey of processors used for embedded products. The key points I gleaned from it are:

  1. 54% of the products use at least one 32bit processor.
  2. 27% of the products run "some flavor of Windows."
  3. Nearly all applications running above 100MHz run on a "high-end OS" (i.e. Windows and Linux).
  4. Software-development tool availability was reported, overwhelmingly, as the number one reason for selecting a processor.

But, perhaps, the most astounding fact is that about 12 respondents were bold enough to report that they use a 4-bit processor in their product. I’ve programmed a lot of 32, 16 and 8 bitters, but never a 4 bitter. So, I can only imagine what "joy" that would be <grin>.
