Do you miss tab in OneNote?

One of my favourite features in OneNote 2007 is that when you hit tab it auto inserts a table for you, I have found this to be the best way to start making tables.  I have only once wanted to enter an old fashion tab in OneNote and I did it by copying and pasting from Notebook/Windows Run dialog.  Anyhow it looks like Olya Veselova, OneNote PM, has blogged something new: Workaround for "turning off" the TAB key creating a table instead of a regular TAB in OneNote.  Here is her tip:

Create an Auto-correct rule that turns your chosen character sequence (e.g. "\t") into a regular TAB:

  1. Open Notepad and type one TAB. Select it and copy it.
  2. Go to OneNote and click Tools > Auto-correct Options...
  3. In the dialog, put your desired sequence of characters (e.g. \t, or \tab, or TAB, or <t>, or whatever you like) into the "Replace:" field.
  4. Paste the TAB that you copied from Notepad into the "With:" filed. Click Add.

Now, any \t followed by a SPACE will be replaced by a regular TAB.

    I don't miss the TAB, because I can always use INDENT RIGHT, using alt+shift+right arrow. I'm so used to this that I even try to use this shortcut in other programs that don't have it :)

    Yes, while I love the fact that onenote now can easily make tables, I do miss the regular "TAB".  Since I outline more often than make tables in onenote,I'd prefer that making tables was a CTRL TAB or some other key sequence.  But that's just me, and  I've been addicted to Onenote since pre-table days and haven't gotten used to table'ng yet.  I really miss the internet explorer onenote toy that let me have a drop-down menu for selecting saving locations.

    Instead of overiding the TAB Table tool Or copying and pasting a Tab space try using the alt key code "alt + 9"

    I miss tab a lot!  I hate the automatic table feature, I hate being forced to use tables.  Why would they take away that option?  it's obnoxious.

    Regarding this issue, Daniel Escapa on another forum simply said "this option will not be changed".  I love it!   This is exactly why Microsoft have so many detractors.  I'm using Onenote 2010 in 2012 and the tab key is still completely hard coded to insert a table.   When you're a monopoly/industry giant it seems that you tell customers what they can and can't do.   Get a clue Microsoft/Daniel and try listening to your customers, for once.  It may be revolutionary idea for you but it does work.

    Thanks for this post. I agree with the other posts here - it's ridiculous having to use a workaround in order to use a standard function as-is i.e. it's a TAB key, it should function as a TAB key unless I specify otherwise. If I want to insert a table, then make that the alternate key sequence. One of you used the word "obnoxious". I think that captures it nicely :)

    I used the auto-correct method to replace the t string with a tab character.  That worked well in the local copy of the notebook.  The synchronized copy, however, up in my SkyDrive account does not show tab characters.  All that nice columnar alignment I did in the local copy was lost in the SkyDrive copy.  What works in the OneNote program isn't honored in the SkyDrive view of the notebook.

    With all due respect, I believe the vast majority of people see changing the default behavior of a keyboard key, without making that an option to enable/disable, as brain-dead foolishness. Could it be the decision to do so was engineered by Google moles to make Microsoft look inept?  ;<)
