Welcome!

Hello, I'm Chris Baldwin.  I'm a Program Manager on the SQL Server Reporting Services team.  I primarily work on the report rendering area of the product where we're all very hard at work making sure that your reports look the way you want them to and behave the way you expect when exported to the various formats that we support.  I'll use this newly created blog (my first ever!) to discuss some of the finer points of report rendering and hopefully offer some insight and tips that you will find useful in your own reporting scenarios.  I came to Microsoft from a company that specialized in Office-based reporting so I'll also talk quite a bit about the future of Office integration with Reporting Services.

I invite you to leave comments and contact me through this blog if you have any feedback or questions on any Reporting Services topics in this area.

    Hi Chris,
I have an issue with the HTML rendering of my reports, I've tried the interactivesize property but it hasn't made a difference in display of my reports.  Sometimes text is moved down a row or totally in the wrong place...?  If I export the report to pdf then the report appears correctly.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jacque

    Jacque,

What exactly is wrong with your HTML reports?  HTML/Winforms/Preview has a different pagination model than physical page renderers like PDF and Image.

Hi,We have developed few reports displaying data using chart layout. In the Data tab, we have specified MDX query that will return top 10 records. But now, instead of restricting to just top 10 records, we would like to display all records and go in for pagination. Is there some setting in the chart properties, where in I can display the first n records in first page, and the next n records( if available) in the next page and so on?Can I specify the value of n somewhere in the propeties?I read through many posts regarding pagination but those couldn't help me much. Please help me in solving this problem.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

This may be a little late, but I had the same issue as Topher this morning.I had 3 columns of numerical data. 2 columns were pulling from the database and the 3rd was a calculation. The first two columns were correctly displaying in Excel as numbers, but the third was giving me the "number stored as text alert."I just added CDec() around the calculation to convert the value to a decimal and it fixed the problem.

I have a report with default values that renders a large report that takes a long time to load. What I would like to have happen is that the report doesn't render until the "view report" button is actually chosen, thus leaving time for the user to narrow down their search options before the report tries to render.I have looked for a couple days and while I'm sure this is simple, I just cannot find an elegant way to do this. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Chris,I have an invoice report and I would like to have the "Keep Together" functionality for one of the groups.Basically I want a "page break" when the group section doesn't fit in the remaining section of the current page. Is there a way (or workaroud) to implement such functionality? Thanks,Ioan Cozma,Toronto, Canada

Hi Chris,I use the 'Export to Excel' feature in reporting services and find that the file size is very big because of the formatting the excel applies. When I open the Excel sheet and clear the formating, I find that the file size is reduced a lot.I would like to know if there is any way I can export only the values to excel and not the formatting? Is there any customization built around the export to excel?thanks in Advance....
