Log files created during Xbox 360 PC setup

I have heard from a few folks who have run into issues installing the software to enable using an Xbox 360 as a Media Center Extender with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. I wanted to post a list of log files that are created by the Xbox 360 PC setup package so that people have a place to start looking if this setup fails for some reason.

Xbox 360 PC setup is implemented as a chained set of Windows XP hotfixes, a version of the .NET Framework, Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, and a couple of other miscellaneous packages. Depending on which of the components are already installed on your system, the Xbox 360 PC setup will create some or all of the following log files:

• %temp%\netfx.log
• %windir%\dvcsetup.log
• %windir%\dvcconn.log
• %windir%\ehd_msi.log
• %windir%\ehd_wmc.log
• %windir%\kb888795.log
• %windir%\kb891593.log
• %windir%\kb895961.log
• %windir%\kb899337.log
• %windir%\kb899510.log
• %windir%\kb900325.log
• %windir%\kb902841.log
• %windir%\kb903157.log
• %windir%\kb905589.log
• %windir%\mcsetup.log
• %windir%\mcsetup_ui.log
• %windir%\medctroc.log
• %windir%\spupdsvc.log
• %windir%\wmsetup.log

You can also download this script and run it to automatically gather all of the above files into a single directory to make it easier to find them.

  hey man i have service pack 2, which it says on the site is acceptable, and after i downloaded it and tried to install it, it just installed it really fast and then closed and nothing happened on my computer after that, and it still didn't work for my xbox 360, you know a way i can fix this?

  Hi Matt - I am not sure I understand exactly what is happening on your system.  Does Update Rollup 2 setup fail, or does it install but you cannot connect your Xbox 360 to your Media Center afterwards?  If it is the first one, can you please zip and attach the log files listed at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/10/16/481689.aspx and send them to me at Aaron (dot) Stebner (at) microsoft (dot) com?

  Hi Sven - From what I've been able to tell by looking at the source code for this setup, it appears to think that you're missing a hotfix that is required for Xbox 360 PC Setup.  Can you check and see if you have the following value in the registry on your system: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionHotFixKB895961] Installed=1 If you do not, I think the way to resolve this is to install the "full" package for XBox 360 PC setup instead of the "lite" package. If this does not work for you, please contact me using http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/contact.aspx and I can try to assist you further from there.

  Sorry to show up 3 years late, but the fix for "There was a problem with the installation of Windows XP Media Center Edition" can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954622 I found this blog on Google and figured I might save somebody from actually uninstalling Media Center updates like I did (which ended up being unnecessary).
