Gartner: Private Cloud Computing Plans From Conference Polls
Polls from the December 2009 Gartner Data Center Conference show that clients are concerned about public cloud computing, the challenges of private cloud computing and their plans for both through 2012.
Polls show that IT professionals focused on the data center are concerned with public cloud computing security and privacy issues. Most plan to invest more in private cloud computing through 2012; however, of the challenges that will hinder private cloud computing, the least important is technology.
Key Findings
- Polls show that concerns with public cloud computing security and privacy were three times more important than any other concerns, including performance, immaturity and regulatory compliance.
- Seventy percent of those polled plan to invest more in private cloud computing through 2012; only 8% expect to invest more in public cloud computing services.
- Private cloud computing can be used to gain more control over your infrastructure implementations, while moving IT users to more service-oriented relationships.
- Gartner Data Center Conference (DCC) attendees see management and operational processes, funding/chargeback models, service description, and self-service interface and culture as the biggest challenges to private cloud computing. Technology was rated sixth out of the seven challenges offered.
Recommendations
- Develop a strategic plan for virtualization, including whether your future virtualization architecture will evolve into private, public or hybrid cloud computing.
- Private cloud computing can be a major investment. Although issues with security and privacy may be real with public cloud computing services, test your assumptions and fully analyze your requirements before you rule out using public cloud computing services.
- Private cloud computing requires a focus on process issues (operational, management, funding and service description) and people issues (cultural and political) before investments in technology solutions.
