Concepts and terminology
The e-commerce platform is made up of several different concepts and terms that are integral to the experience.
Content management system
The content management system is integrated directly into the e-commerce platform to provide rich indexing features, life cycle management for marketing materials, and features for localization and multi-item publishing through releases. It’s built on top of a scalable, resilient Microsoft Azure infrastructure that includes Microsoft Entra ID and Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB.
Digital asset management
Commerce digital asset management extends the content management store and keeps track of images, videos, and file downloads that are available on the web storefront site. It has an image resizer service to optimize downloaded images for different devices and contexts. This capability helps enhance performance while also managing image quality. Digital asset management is also integrated with Microsoft Azure Media Services for playback of video streams in an efficient manner.
Web storefront
The content management system stores its pages as a series of modules. It assembles those modules into an HTML page and is composed of the rendering platform, which includes the commerce data proxy and the extensibility layer. This platform forms the base that is supplemented by a set of modules that power a web-based commerce experience: the Dynamics 365 Commerce module library. Businesses can modify this module library to meet their unique requirements. Alternatively, they can supplement the library by using extensions and modules that are developed internally or by a partner.
