Resolving Problems Connecting to the Application-Tier Server
When you try to connect to an application-tier server from a Team Foundation client, you might encounter two categories of problems:
Client Connectivity Describes problems that any user can troubleshoot.
Server Configuration Describes problems that require administrative permissions to troubleshoot. If you do not have the appropriate permissions, you must ask an administrator to help resolve these problems.
Client Connectivity
The following table lists common problems that you might encounter if you try to connect to an application-tier server for Team Foundation from Team Explorer or another client interface. In the table, problems that are more likely to occur appear first. Therefore, you should try the resolutions in the order in which they appear so that you can increase the chance that you can solve the problem quickly.

Resolution |

The name of the application-tier server was typed incorrectly. |
Verify that the name was typed correctly. Verify whether the name of the application-tier server has changed. If the name has changed, you must create a connection that uses the new name. For more information, see How to: Connect to Team Foundation Server. |
The network has a problem. |
Verify that network connections on your computer are functioning correctly. Try to run other applications that also require network connections. If those applications also do not function correctly, you probably have a network problem. |
The application-tier server is not functioning, or a service is not running. |
Verify whether basic connectivity to Team Foundation Server is working. Open the following URL: http://ServerName:8080/services/v1.0/serverstatus.asmx. If you cannot open this URL, contact your administrator. If you are an administrator, see Resolving Problems Accessing Web Services. |
You do not have sufficient permissions to access a Web site or service. |
Verify whether you have sufficient permissions for the action that you want to perform. If the errors that you receive indicate read-only or blocked actions, you might not have permission to act on the data. To resolve this issue, see Team Foundation Server Permissions. If you are not a project administrator, you might need to contact your project administrator to grant you appropriate permissions. |
The version of Team Explorer differs from that of Team Foundation Server. |
To resolve this issue, see Troubleshooting Team Foundation Version Compatibility. |
The client is configured to bypass the proxy server. |
Reconfigure the BypassProxyOnLocal setting on the client computer. For more information, see How to: Change the BypassProxyOnLocal Configuration. |
Server Configuration
The following table lists server configuration issues that can cause problems when users try to connect to the application-tier server for Team Foundation from Team Explorer or another client interface. In the table, problems that are more likely to occur appear first. Therefore, you should try the resolutions in the order in which they appear so that you can increase the chance that you can solve the problem quickly.

A Web site identity for Team Foundation is configured incorrectly. |
Verify or correct the server binding assignments made to Web sites for Team Foundation. For more information, see How to: Verify or Correct Server Binding Assignments. |
Access to a Web site for Team Foundation has been restricted. |
Verify or correct restrictions made to those Web sites based on IP addresses and domain names. For more information, see How to: Verify or Correct IP Address and Domain Name Restrictions. |

Verify or correct port binding assignments for Web sites and port assignments for the firewall. For more information, see How to: Verify or Correct Port Assignments. |
You cannot add a user or group to Team Foundation Server. |
You might have trust issues between domains. For more information, see Troubleshooting Team Foundation Server Permissions and Security. |
