How to: Create, Delete, or Modify a Role Assignment (Management Studio)

Access to a report server is controlled through role assignments that you create and manage in SQL Server Management Studio or Report Manager. You can set role assignments on the Home folder to grant access to reports, report models, folders, and shared data sources. You can also set role assignments on the server node to grant access to system-wide resources, such as shared schedules. To learn more about how to use the item-level and system-level roles together, see Tutorial: Setting Permissions in Reporting Services.

To create a role assignment

  1. In Object Explorer, expand a report server node.

  2. Expand the Home folder, and then navigate to the item that you want to set item-level security for.

  3. Right-click an item, and then click Properties. The General page of the item's Properties dialog box is displayed.

  4. Click Permissions in the Select a page area.

  5. Select Use these roles for each group or user account.

    Note

Security settings are no longer inherited from the parent after you select this option.

  6. Click the Add Group or User button. The Select Users or Groups dialog box is displayed.

  7. Type the account name of the group or user that you are creating a role assignment for, and then click OK.

  8. Select one or more roles that best describe the actions that you want the user or group to be able to perform on the current item.

  9. Click OK.

To delete a role assignment

  1. In Object Explorer, expand a report server node.

  2. Expand the Home folder, and then navigate to the item that you want to set item-level security for.

  3. Right-click an item, and then click Properties.

  4. Click Permissions in the Select a page area.

  5. Click the group or user that you want to delete the role assignment for.

  6. Clear all roles that are currently enabled for the group or user.

  7. Click OK.
