Upgrading or Migrating Analysis Services

If you are using Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services, you have the following options when you install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services (SSAS):
- Install Analysis Services side-by-side with an earlier version.
- Upgrade an earlier version of Analysis Services.
- Migrate existing Analysis Services databases.
Important
Regardless of which installation option you choose, you should be aware of which SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services features and functionality have been discontinued, deprecated, or changed. For more information, see SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services Backward Compatibility.

Before upgrading to SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services, review the following requirements:

Installing Analysis Services Side-by-Side with an Earlier Version
SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services does not support named instances. Therefore, on a computer that is running instances of both SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services and SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services, the instance of SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services must always be the default instance. In this case, SQL Server Setup permits only the installation of named instances of SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services. SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services can continue to run as the default instance, side-by-side with named instances of SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services.

Modifying a Side-by-Side Installation
You can use the Analysis Services Migration Wizard to migrate databases from an instance of SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services to SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services. For more information about running the Migration Wizard, see Migrating Existing Analysis Services Databases.
If you remove the default instance of SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services after you have migrated its databases, you can use the Analysis Services Instance Rename tool to make a named instance of SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services the default instance on the server.

Upgrading an Earlier Version of Analysis Services
Upgrading SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services involves the installation of SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services and the migration of existing Analysis Services databases to the SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services database format. You can upgrade SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services and migrate existing databases during Setup, or you can migrate databases after you install SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services, by using other software tools in addition to SQL Server Setup.
Important
When upgrading from a 64-bit edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 to a 64-bit edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2005, you must upgrade Analysis Services before upgrading the Database Engine.
To upgrade an instance of SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services during Setup
On the Instance Name page of the SQL Server Installation Wizard, select Default Instance.
To confirm the presence of the SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services instance, click the Installed Instances button.
To migrate an instance of SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services after Setup
Install a named instance of SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services by using the SQL Server Installation Wizard or an alternative installation method. For more information, see Installing SQL Server Analysis Services by Using Setup or Installing SQL Server Analysis Services from the Command Prompt.
Use the Analysis Services Migration Wizard to migrate SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services database metadata to SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services. This step re-creates the database structures in the new SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services database format while leaving the original databases intact. Process the new SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services databases. This step populates the new database structures with data. For more information, see Processing in Analysis Services.
Verify the database upgrade process. Review the upgraded databases in SQL Server Management Studio, and test them with your client applications.
Uninstall SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services if it is no longer needed.
If you remove the SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services default instance, you can use the Analysis Services Instance Rename tool to rename the named instance of SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services as the default instance.

Migrating Existing Analysis Services Databases
You can use the Analysis Services Migration Wizard to upgrade SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services databases to the SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services format. During migration, the wizard copies SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services database objects and then re-creates them on the specified instance of SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services. The source databases are left intact and are not modified.
