The role of Excel Calculation Services is to load workbooks, calculate the workbooks, call custom code (user-defined functions), and refresh external data. Excel Calculation Services also maintains a session state for the duration of user interactions with a workbook.

From the SharePoint Central Administration Web site in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, you can configure the document libraries, UNC paths, and HTTP Web sites (trusted file locations) from which Excel Calculation Services can open workbooks.

Trusted file locations

Trusted file locations are document libraries, UNC paths, or HTTP Web sites that need to be explicitly trusted before Excel Calculation Services accesses them.

You can create various trusted file locations for different purposes or projects, and tailor the settings and permissions of the file locations accordingly.

When you add a trusted file location, you also need to configure certain properties. The following table describes these properties.

Properties Descriptions

Location

Location is a Windows SharePoint Services location, network file share, or Web folder from which a server running Excel Calculation Services is permitted to access the workbooks.

There are various options for this property, which are as follows:

  • Address

    This option contains the address of the Windows SharePoint Services location, network file share or Web folder address of the trusted location.

  • Location type

    This option is used to define the storage type of the trusted location.

    • Windows SharePoint Services

      This option is used for Windows SharePoint Services Web Applications. If the document library is stored in the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 content database, ensure that Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 is selected as the Location Type.

    • UNC (Universal Naming Convention)

      This option is used when you need to use a shared location as the trusted file location. UNC provides a format for unique and easily recalled names to identify and access shared resources. The format for the UNC path is as follows:

      \\<server-name>\<share-name>\<directory-name>

    • HTTP

      This option is used when you need to use the Web folder addresses as the trusted location.

  • Trust Children

    This is the trusted child libraries or directories.

  • Description

    This option is used to provide an optional description, explaining the purpose of the trusted location.

Session management

This property describes the behavior of the Excel Calculation Services sessions that use workbooks. There are various options for this property, which are as follows:

  • Session Timeout

    The maximum time (in seconds) that an Excel Calculation Services session can remain open and inactive before it is closed. This time is measured from the end of each request.

  • Short Session Timeout

    The duration (in seconds) measured from the end of the initial open request.

  • Maximum Request Duration

    The maximum duration (in seconds) of a single request in a session.

Workbook properties

Behavior of workbooks from this location in Excel Calculation Services sessions. There are various options for this property, which are as follows:

  • Maximum Workbook Size

    The maximum size, in megabytes (MB), of a workbook that can be opened by Excel Calculation Services.

  • Maximum Chart Size

    The maximum size (in MB) of a chart that can be opened by Excel Calculation Services.

Calculation behavior

This property describes the calculation modes in Excel Calculation Services for workbooks from the trusted location. There are various options for this property, which are as follows:

  • Volatile Function Cache Lifetime

    The maximum time (in seconds) that a computed value for a volatile function is cached for automatic recalculations.

  • Workbook Calculation Mode

    Workbook Calculation Mode has four modes, which are described as follows:

    • File

    • Manual

    • Automatic

    • Automatic except data tables

External Data

This property includes the options for the external data connections in Excel Calculation Services for workbooks from the trusted location. The various options for this property are as follows:

  • Allow External Data

    Allow External Data has three options, which are described as follows:

    • None

    • Trusted data connection libraries only

    • Trusted data connection libraries and embedded

  • Warn on Refresh

    Displays a warning before refreshing the external data used by files.

  • Stop When Refresh on Open Fails

    Stop the open operation on a file in this location under the following circumstances: The file contains a Refresh on Open data connection setting and the file cannot be refreshed while it is opening, and the user does not have an Open user right to the file.

  • External Data Cache Lifetime

    This is the maximum time (in seconds) that the system can use external data query results.

  • Maximum Concurrent Queries Per Session

    The maximum number of external data queries that can execute concurrently in a single session.

User Defined Functions

This property calls the user-defined functions in Excel Calculation Services for workbooks from this location.

Note

For Excel Services, you can configure restrictions on the use of data connections.

Trusted data providers

Trusted data providers are databases residing outside the Excel Services farm that Excel Calculation Services is explicitly configured to trust when processing data connections in workbooks. Excel Calculation Services attempts to process a data connection only if the connection is to a database that has been added to the Excel Services trusted data providers list.

When you add the trusted data providers, you also need to configure certain properties. The following table describes these properties.

Property Description

Provider

This is an external data provider that workbooks opened by using Excel Services are permitted to use. There are various options for this property, which are as follows:

  • Provider ID

    The identifier for the data provider, such as SQL Server or SQL Native Client.

  • Provider Type

    • OLE DB (Object Linking and Embedding database)

    • ODBC (Open Database Connectivity)

    • ODBC DSN (Open Database Connectivity Data Source Name)

  • Description

    The optional description provided, describing the purpose of the data provider.

Trusted data connection libraries

These are SharePoint libraries that contain Office data connection (.odc) files that are used to manage workbook connections to trusted data providers. In the trusted subsystem model, front-end Web servers and application servers running Excel Calculation Services trust the accounts of the associated Office SharePoint Server 2007 applications.

When you add the trusted data connection libraries, you also need to configure certain properties. The following table describes these properties.

    The document library address of the data connection library.
