Applications
Updated: 2009-04-30
A Planning Server application contains the following elements:
Model sites
Models and dimensions
Forms and reports
Data source connections
Other metadata such as views, permissions, and process scheduling information
Note
Each application maps to one application database and one (optional) staging database in Microsoft SQL Server. Each model site maps to one separate database in SQL Server Analysis Services.
On the Applications page, you can perform management tasks such as creating an application or taking an application offline. You must belong to the Global Administrator role to manage applications in the Planning Administration Console. For more information about the Global Administrator role, see Global Administrator role.
The following illustration shows the different application states.
Application states
You can change an application to a different state by clicking one of the buttons in the following list. Use these states to control access to the application and avoid data loss when you perform database maintenance or other administrative tasks. The availability of buttons depends on the current state of the application.
Take Online. Makes an application available to all users who have appropriate permissions.
Take Async-Offline. Turns off the Planning Process Service. In the Async-Offline state, users can interact with the application. The application will continue to process the items that are already in the workflow task queues, but it will not process any new workflow tasks. You must change an application to the Async-Offline state before you can move an online application to the Offline state. When all items have been processed and the queues are empty, the application can be taken offline.
Lock. Locks the application. This button is available only when the selected application is in the Async-Offline or Offline state. When an application is locked, only a member of the Data Administrator or Modeler role that has application-scope permissions can interact with it in Planning Business Modeler. This feature is useful when you migrate an application or perform other maintenance tasks.
Take Offline. Prevents any interaction from Planning Business Modeler or PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel users. This feature is useful when you perform maintenance tasks.
