Install Planning Server in a distributed environment

Updated: 2009-04-09

Planning Server installation includes one Web service, a Windows service, and a thin-client administration console. These components can be installed on separate computers in any combination as long as all components are present and available.

The Planning Server installation consists of:

  • Planning System Databases

  • Planning Server Process Service

  • Planning Server Remote Administration Service

  • Planning Web Service

It is possible to install multiple instances for each component on additional computers in a network load-balanced environment. However, this is considered an advanced deployment and should only be performed by experienced IT professionals. See "Planning Server Scalability" in the PerformancePoint Planning and Architecture Guide for more details.

Planning Server also requires Microsoft SQL Server to host the Planning Application Databases. Each application that is created in Planning Server requires its own database. In a distributed installation, we recommend that you have at least one computer in the topology running SQL Server Analysis Services, which contains the OLAP cubes that store business data.

For both SQL Server and SQL Server Analysis Services, you can have one or more computers in the topology. See "Planning Server Scalability" in the PerformancePoint Planning and Architecture Guide for more details.

Global component prerequisites

Planning Server distributed installation is two-fold. First a Windows Installer (.msi) package runs the Planning Server Configuration Manager, which copies all necessary installation files to the hard disk of the local computer. Second, the Planning Server Configuration Manager uses the newly copied files to complete the Planning Server installation and configuration. Run the first procedure below on each computer on which you intend to install one of the Planning Server components.

Procedures

Install Planning Server (PPLsrv.msi)

  1. Insert the Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 CD. When the program starts, a startup screen appears. If it does not, browse the CD and click Setup.hta.

  2. From the installation startup screen, select Install Planning Server to begin the Planning Server installation.

Prerequisite checks are run and the Microsoft Licensing Terms are presented.

    Note

Any missing prerequisites are indicated in the Prerequisite check dialog box. All prerequisite checks must succeed. If one or more fails, cancel Setup, install the missing prerequisites, and then rerun Setup.

  3. Accept the License Terms, and then click Next.

  4. On the Directory Selection page, select the installation directory you want, verify that enough disk space exists, and then click Next.

    Note

The default path is: C:\%Program Files%\Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server.

  5. Click Install to run Planning Server Setup.

  6. Planning Server Setup runs, extracting all installation files to the directory path that you specified in step 4.

  7. On the Planning Server Setup Has Completed page, ensure that the Run the Planning Server Configuration Manager check box is selected, and then click Finish.

    Note

If you choose to exit Setup without starting Planning Server Configuration Manager, the components will not be configured for use, and your Planning setup will remain incomplete. You must rerun Planning Server Configuration Manager to complete Setup and successfully configure your Planning Server. To rerun Planning Server Configuration Manager, do the following:

    1. Navigate to the Windows Start menu.

    2. Click Start, point to Programs, Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007, and then click Planning Server Configuration Manager.

Planning Server Configuration Manager opens to its Welcome page and allows setup and configuration of the local Planning Server installation files.

Install the Planning System Database

  1. Complete the "Run Install Planning Server (PPLsrv.msi)" procedure described earlier in this article.

  2. On the Planning Server Configuration Manager Welcome page, click Next.

  3. On the Prerequisites page, verify that all prerequisites for the planning system database have successfully passed the prerequisite check. Click Next.

  4. On the Installation Options page, select Distributed configuration.

  5. Select only the PerformancePoint Planning System Databases component, and then click Next.

  6. On the Databases page, in the SQL Server location field, select the computer running SQL Server or the SQL Server instance, and then click Next.

    Note

Two options are available for the Planning System Database. Create databases for Planning Server or Provision databases for Planning Server (Advanced). Create databases for Planning Server should be selected if no previous PerformancePoint PPSPlanningSystem and PPSPlanningService databases exist. The user who is running the Planning system installation must have the sysadmin role on the computer running SQL Server that contains the Planning system database. Provision databases for Planning Server should be selected if your database administrator has manually created the PPSPlanningSystem database and the PPSPlanningService database for you. The database administrator only creates the empty databases. The Provision databases for Planning Server selection will use these empty databases and populate the PPSPlanning System database.

  7. On the Global Administrator Account page, set the domain and username to be used for the Global Administrator role (GA). Click Next.

  8. On the Validation page, verify that all validations are successful, and then click Next.

  9. On the Confirmation page, review the listed information, and then click Configure. Installation and configuration runs for PerformancePoint Planning System Database.

  10. On the Summary page, review the installation results, and then click Close.
