IFilter and file type reference (FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint)

After content is crawled (either through the FAST Search Content SSA or by using a FAST Search specific connector), the items are submitted to Microsoft FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint for item processing. IFilters are used to extract content and metadata from the crawled content.
If you want to index a file type that is not supported by an IFilter that is provided with FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint, you should inspect the Crawl Log to determine the necessary steps. If you crawl a file type without a registered filter, only the file properties are included in the index and not the actual content of the item. In this case, the index will only contain the metadata properties of the file in the content repository, for example the date the file was created or the title of the file.
