How to: Create a Task Scheduler That Limits the Degree of Concurrency

In rare scenarios, you might be able to achieve a performance speedup by creating a custom task scheduler that is derived from the System.Threading.Tasks.TaskScheduler class. You can then specify this scheduler in a For method or ForEach() method by using the System.Threading.Tasks.ParallelOptions enumeration. When you use Task objects directly, you can specify the custom scheduler by using the TaskFactory constructor that takes a TaskScheduler as an input parameter, or by some other means such as StartNew().

You can also use a custom scheduler to achieve functionality that the default scheduler does not provide, such as strict first-in, first-out (FIFO) execution order. The following example demonstrates how to create a custom task scheduler. This scheduler lets you specify the degree of concurrency.

Example

The following example is taken from the Parallel Extensions Samples on the MSDN Code Gallery Web site.

Imports System
Imports System.Collections.Generic
Imports System.Linq
Imports System.Threading
Imports System.Threading.Tasks
Module Module2

    Sub Main()

        ' Create a scheduler that uses only one thread.
        Dim lcts As New LimitedConcurrencyLevelTaskScheduler(1)

        ' Create a TaskFactory and pass it our custom scheduler.
        Dim factory As New TaskFactory(lcts)
        Dim cts As New CancellationTokenSource()

        ' Use our factory to run a task.
        Dim t As Task = factory.StartNew(Sub()
                                             For i As Integer = 1 To 50000
                                                 Console.Write("{0} on thread {1}.   ", i, Thread.CurrentThread.ManagedThreadId)
                                             Next
                                         End Sub,
                                cts.Token)

        Console.WriteLine("Press any key to exit.")
        Console.ReadKey()

    End Sub
