While I hate to see another software vendor cop a bad wrap on their initiatives in the patch management space, it makes me happy to see the comments that have been made on Microsoft's own initiatives.

As the article suggests, when we first introduced our "Trustworthy Computing Initiative (TWC)" a while back, it was not looked at as a serious commitment to helping to protect our customers and their IT environments. Now it seems that many customers are reaping the benefits of the work that has been done on TWC.

The great thing is that customers need not pay for the benefit of what is being done here, they can implement many free solutions that will help manage the update status of their environments.

One such solution is Windows Server Update Services, a free tool for customers running Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008. WSUS helps customers to manage and deploy updates throughout their organization centrally, making patch management a simpler task.
