Unfortunate Contribution

Me: that stupid WeatherBug thing is on IE as well!
Shai: It's my special contribution to your world.
Me: You are crapifying my computer.
Shai: I only wish I could put it on my Mac as well.

My wife has been using my laptop since she broke her leg last month.  Her favorite program seems to be WeatherBug.  I just learned she actually paid money to put it on her computer.  However on my laptop she installed what seems to be an adware version.  I can't really speak to the quality of weather bug, as I basically ignore weather.  In Seattle you can assume overcast with a constant light mist and be correct most of the time.  Shai, however, thinks WeatherBug is the coolest thing since Equestriad 2001.   I don't hate WeatherBug per se as much as it being in the system tray.  I distrust most anything that puts itself in the system tray, which for me is universal signal that a program is out to annoy me.

What about internal apps that minimize to the system tray? Since the majority of users that I deploy to demand reserving as much screen real estate as possible I have grown fond of putting my apps in there upon start up for things like time trackers and apps that they use only for a couple minutes at a time, but all day long.

Minimizing apps to the systray is a feature I quite like in most of my apps that I like to keep running, but out of my Alt-Tab list. Is it normal for developers to add the features they like the most?

Nice to know I'm not the only one!

I agree about the weather bug. By the way, why didn't you set your wife up as a limited user. Then, if she does manage to install the program (perhaps by installing to her profile folders instead of Program Files), it will only run under her account if at all. You can let it spy on her as much as she wants without it affecting you.

I also use WeatherBug primarily for winter storm and winds alerts which ofter bring down power lines here around Redmond. For Konfabulator you can get RSS widget and subscribe to NOAA alerts for your state here
