Benchmark Test Results: SQL Server Provides Performance, Scalability, and Value for RedPrairie’s Parcel

A team of engineers from RedPrairie and Microsoft worked together to test the performance and scalability of RedPrairie’s Parcel on Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 and the Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system. Tests were also run on a pre-release version of SQL Server 2012, SQL Server Denali CTP3. The team designed a benchmark study to emulate a real-world, enterprise-class workload running on commodity hardware. A variety of tests were performed on both physical and virtual servers to analyze the system performance on different hardware and software configurations, and a final benchmark test was documented.

The results beat expectations, demonstrating that on a 6-core entry-level application server with hyper-threading enabled, it is possible to achieve a throughout of more than 150,000 packages per hour. If the number of cores is doubled, the throughput can be as high as 245,000 packages per hour. A more powerful server will likely perform even better. The time to manifest a single package for all tests was significantly below one second.
