Windows update ( XP and Vista ) for Intel multi-core processors.
A microcode update from Intel that affects multi-core processors, here.
This seems like a good update to take, even if I don't have much more data than you do.

I can't believe that this update does not apply to my system too! What should I do? I have an OEM original version of Visa Ultimate 32bit. My PC is brand new (I bought it 15 days ago).Anonymous

NickN: I have seen Linus' response to the errata this is supposed to fix, and he doesnt feel it as dire as you indicate. Opinions vary.Anonymous

NickN: No worries, I appreciate the depth of your commnts. I have read the errata sheet, yes. Delving into hw bugs isnt something I normally do, and isnt a topic normally of great interest to the FS community. It appears to be a worthy update but the details are, well, detailed. Hence my post recommending it without diving in. Do note all chips have bugs, just like all sw does. Its just seldom that we hear about them. All MS is trying to do here is serve the customer, by getting this update into their hands. I dont believe we need conspiracy theories to explain this behavior. And I do believe we would extend the same service to AMD if/when they needed it. As I said, opinions vary about this update and the severity of the issue behind it. See http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=7897 for another set of takes on this issue. It appears in our discussion I am playing Linus and you are playing Theo. :-) Note that Linus says Intel and AMD are actually better about addressing their chip issues than other CPU vendors. BTW, thanks for the more in-depth discussion of the TLB issue, that was definitely a worthy comment! And with that said, all the people that have the affected CPUs will be well-servied by this update.Anonymous

Phil As far as I'm concerned all of this is moot if I'm only going to have a few oportunites to intsall this os before I'd have to purchase it again. If that is really the case ... I'll never touch it. But on another note thank you for all the info and work on fsx. John
