InstaSurvey 7001 - New Downloads UI

Today, I posted mock-ups of a new user interface design for Subscriber Downloads web pages (it can be found here: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/bb980944.aspx).

I am interested in your constructive criticism of the new user interface design. Please use the links below to indicate whether you like or dislike this style of navigating to our products. The links are simple “mailto” links that will pre-fill out the subject line and body of an email message that will go to a mail box we’ve setup to capture feedback.

Please choose one of the following links:

Thanks again for your time and opinions!

Chris

The fine print, in a large font:

1. We will only contact you about your feedback if you indicate it is ok to do so (the default is “do not contact me” so make sure you adjust that value if it is ok for us to contact you).

2. We will not be adding your email address to any database or mailing list. We are collecting feedback in this manner because it is quick to do so (we’ve got some other plans in the works to collect feedback, but they aren’t ready yet). If you feed uneasy about providing your “real” email address, I’ve posted the survey in a “cut and paste” format, so you can use a “throw away” email account you might have.

3. I will read every single response. I will post the results of the survey after about one week. I won’t post all of the verbatim comments, but I’ll include some of the entertaining ones.

Cut and Paste version – If you would prefer to manually populate your email message, please use this format:

I'm glad to see a re-design, because the current "new" interface is just terrible.  The old one really wasn't that great either.  I get tired of performing new mouse acrobatics just to download a file.  My recommendation:  K.I.S.S.  I'm sure you know that that stands for...

The new mockups look great and would be an improvement over the current version... if it works in Mozilla and maybe even a text / mobile browser. the best way to do this is to keep the site design minimal or if preferred to support a useable fallback site for alternate browsers and accessiblity saoftware. I don't think a screen reader coupld make much of the current site or the mock-up and I'm skeptical either would work on most mboile browsers. This is a stronger argument than my annoyance at having to find ways to run IE7 on Mac and Linux machines to download software ;) Thanks for welcoming feedback and working to improve things.

I hate focus driven menus.  They become an extreme pain to hit just the right spot to trigger and if you have any mouse jitter, start over.  Please go back to clickable expanding menues or give the choice of menu types.
