Monitoring Multiple Forests with OpsMgr 2007 ADMP

Currently the Active Directory Management Pack (ADMP) for Operations Manager 2007 does not officially support monitoring domain controllers in multiple forests (trusted or untrusted), which is the same limitation with the ADMP For MOM 2005.  In order to monitor multiple forests using the Active Directory Management Pack, you need to implement a separate Management Group per forest.  Rules/scripts that do not work from a single Management Group as an example are:

  • Topology Discovery
  • Remote Topology Discovery
  • Replication Monitoring

While this situation is a bit disconcerting, rest assured we are working hard to address this.  Those of us who work directly with customers and help implement or sell Operations Manager, are in dialog with the product group to stress the importance of releasing an updated version of the ADMP sooner than originally planned.  Supporting the requirement of monitoring domain controllers in multiple forests from a single Management Group is one of the most commonly requested features.  We obviously want to make sure the ADMP supports that requirement and negates the need for additional hardware, costs, and administrative overhead with multi-forest monitoring.

I wish I could share more background information on this, but that would be unethical and irresponsible of me.  Stay tuned  and if new information surfaces that I can share, I'll be sure to let you know.

NEW MANAGEMENT PACK : 6.0.6452.0 version of the Active Directory. Active Directory (AD) multiple forests Topology Discovery is a new feature in this management pack that was added to provide feature parity with the Active Directory Management Pack for Operations Manager 2005 with Service Pack 1 (SP1).  In both Active Directory management packs for Operations Manager 2005 (SP1) and Operations Manager 2007 (SP1), to discover other forests, a trust relationship is required between the forest hosting the Operations Manager Root Management Server (RMS) and other forests. Forests that have a two-way transitive trust with the RMS forest will be discovered. The following objects will be created and displayed in the Topology views: Forest, Domain, Site, Site Link, and Replication Connection.
