Fun with ML, Stream Analytics and PowerBI – Observing Virality in Real Time

We've had some questions so we updated this post to be more clear. To answer the top one: No we don't store photos, we don't share them and we only use them to guess your age and gender. The photos are discarded from memory once we guess. While we use the terms of service very common in our industry, and similar to most other online services, we have chosen not to store or use the photos in any way other than to temporarily process them to guess your age.

This is a fun story of how we were expecting perhaps 50 users for a test but – in the end – got over 35,000 users and saw the whole thing unfold in real time.

We were building a demo for the day 2 keynote of Microsoft's Build2015 developer conference. We wanted to showcase how developers can easily and quickly build intelligent applications using Azure services. Using our newly released Face detection API's we set up an age guessing website called https://how-old.net on Azure. This page lets users upload a picture and have the API predict the age and gender of any faces recognized in that picture. Now, while the API is reasonably good at locating the faces and identifying gender it isn't particularly accurate with age, but it's often good for a laugh and users have fun with it. We sent email to a group of several hundred within Microsoft asking them to try the page for a few minutes and give us feedback - optimistically hoping for a few tens of people to try it out and generate some usage data to test the demo. But here is what our dashboard showed in three hours:

Within hours, over 210,000 images had been submitted and we had 35000 users from all over the world (about 29k of them from Turkey, as it turned out - apparently there were a bunch of tweets from Turkey mentioning this page).

The demo showed real time insights about how people were using this tool. For instance, we had assumed that folks would mostly select from pre-canned images or use the Bing image search box on the page. But over half the pictures analyzed were of people uploading their own images. This insight prompted us to improve the user experience and we did some additional testing around image uploads from mobile devices.

So What’s The Magic Behind All This?

This may be hard to believe but it took a couple of developers just a day to put this whole solution together, from the web page to the Machine Learning APIs to the real time streaming analytics and real time BI. This turned out to be a great example of the agility and creative power Azure developers get. The key components of this application are:

Extracting the gender and age of the people in these pictures.
Obtaining real time insights on the data extracted above.
Creating real time dashboards to view the above results.

Extracting Gender and Age

We wanted to create an experience that was intelligent and fun could capture the attention of people globally, so we looked at the APIs available in the Azure Machine Learning Gallery. The gallery contains many finished intelligent services such as Face, Speech, and Vision which are part of a new suite called Project Oxford from Bing and Microsoft Research. The Face API has a demo page that uses the API to detect and extract information about faces in a photograph. We found the ability of the face API to estimate age and gender to be particularly interesting and chose this aspect of it for our project. To make the experience more fun we used the face API alongside the Bing Search API from the Azure marketplace to create https://how-old.net.

In addition to age and gender, we also got additional information such the User Agent string of the users of the web site, the latitude and longitude of location from where the picture was uploaded and more. This is represented in the following JSON document:

Real Time Insights

To understand the patterns in the real time data from this website, we used a set of new Microsoft Azure streaming services.

We brought in the data using Azure Event Hubs, a highly scalable publish-subscribe ingestor that can intake millions of events per second. We use the Event Hubs API to stream the JSON document from the web page when the user uploads a picture. Note that the photo is not saved and no information identifying or linking to users is saved (we have no emails or logins or usernames), only the JSON document is streamed to Azure Event Hubs.

Next we needed a stream processing service to aggregate and process the information from thousands of users uploading pictures in real time. For this we use Azure Stream Analytics (ASA), a fully managed low latency high throughput stream processing solution. ASA lets you write your stream processing logic in a very simple SQL -like language.

An example of using ASA, if you want to get the count of “gender” in a 10 second window with a result written every second, all you need is a very simple query to aggregate this information:

In the above query, we are selecting the Time when the result is written (OutTime), Gender, and count of gender. StreamInput is the alias of the Event Hub to which the streaming log data is sent. This is done in a hopping window of 10 seconds, with a hop of 1 second. This query gives the aggregate count of Female and Male faces in the uploaded pictures and this information can be displayed in a dashboard. You can have multiple stream processing queries on data coming from the same Event Hub.

Real Time Dashboards

We use PowerBI to display the results in a real time dashboard. All we did was to choose PowerBI as the output of our stream analytics job (click here to learn how). Then we went to https://app.powerbi.com, and selected the dataset and table created by ASA. There is no additional coding needed to create your real time dashboards.

In this example we have a couple of stream analytics queries. One aggregates age into an age range and passes in other fields such as location to PowerBI, and the other is the query mentioned above. PowerBI lets you easily create a variety of visualizations including maps, line charts, tree view charts and more. Charts get updated in real time as data is generated by users uploading pictures at https://how-old.net. Additionally you can ask natural language questions too (e.g. “What’s the count of people using IOS by gender by age group”) and the charts that are displayed as a result of such a question can be pinned to the real time dashboard.

I did an average of 7. My top age was 50. My lowest age was 29. The average of 7 came out to be 37 and I'm 44. Pretty inaccurate, I'd say. Only one photo picked me out as 44.

Pretty cool, but it guessed me as 44 when I am actually 20... and when I go to dinner with my parents, hostesses will still ask my parents if I need a kids menu. Not sure how accurate this actually is. Maybe I just have a weird face... :)

Keep in mind everyone, its job is to guess how old you look not how old you are.

Even we must admit that often people look older or younger than they actually are.

So we shouldn't be very focused on absolute error, because it isn't trying to guess your actual age necessarily.

Your program needs a lot of tweaking... I used a family christmas photo and only one of the four of us is even remotely close to the age suggested. My mother was guessed to be 10 years younger than myself.

Throwing a number of photos taken on the same day as I posed with different expressions and shaved off a full beard and moustache by stages gave interesting and repeatable results. First the age astimates ere mostly in the ball park of 44 to 47 years when I was then 46. The older estimates were all with a smiling face which shows the most wrinkles. I believe the algorithm pays too much attention to number and size of wrinkles. The worst was 66 years on the photo with the most wrinkles because of tiredness, lighting and smiling. Impassive facial expression gave the lowest scores for me.

I wonder how you can tell that more than half of the pictures originated from users' own photos rather than online pictures? I believe true machine learning functionality is used for that. Please enlighten us!

Just curious...I tried 5 different photos (.jpg's) all very clear and properly exposed. Faces were totally clear in each, but the bot was unable to recognize any face. Got the "we're sorry..." error message. Problem with the api, or with my pictures?

Was very amused to see that the age guess on my face varied between 12 years and 54 years, and in 7 photos did not get my gender right (that's much worse than chance.) Funnier still was the guess on a friend in his mid 20s with facial hair - the programme guessed he was 6!

A picture of me and my friend at 14 and 16 was guessed at 24 and 26. I'm currently 24, usually people assume I am in college, and your software consistently guesses me to be in my 30s. Sorry, but this has quite a ways to go. You might consider gathering actual ages from the users testing this demo to get more data points.

The prediction seems to be much better with women than men. All the photo's I tried with men were WAY off. My husband is 34 and it said he was 65. My dad who is 72 said he was 54! My husband is fit and looks remarkably younger than my dad and he apparently was 9 years older than my dad.

The webpage is pretty consistent in making wrong guesses. I tried a bunch of pics for me and my wife. I ranged between 22 and 46; and my wife between 23 and 63. A full day wasted for a group of engineers. Could have done something productive instead...

Actually very interesting, I uploaded one photo in which I was clean shaven and got an age guess of 25, i'm 24 so thats fairly close; then grabbed another photo before i had shaved with about 2 weeks worth of facial hair, and I got 28, which would make sense considering I do look older with the beard. Pretty cool!

Hey, I just wanted to say how I think that it's kind of dumb to try to tell someone's gender from pictures of them because there are more than two genders, and sometimes people may look like a woman or a man, but they are really agender or gender neutral. Just thought you should know that your website is reinforcing the myth of the gender binary.

I find the 3mb filesize limit quite restrictive--most of my shots are with a DSLR and are over that threshold.

On the other hand I should probably lynch you for calling me almost 25 years older than I am! :)

As for the person who wondered how they could tell the pictures were uploads of their own photos: Look with TinEye. No hit or only hits from photobucket etc or personal blogs: probably their own or family/friends. Hits elsewhere: probably canned.

I had fun fnding how wrong it could get. One image put me at 83. The lowest Ive managed to get s far is 20. All with images from this year. The age most people in real life put me at is 19, so 83 is fantastic. Maybe people will stop asking me for ID soon. I am 24.

You could get this much more accurate if you asked people to fill in their real ages and improve your algorithm. My age in different pictures spanned about 40 years. Happily most were younger than I am by 5 - 20 years.

Why would this site not have buttons or options to tell the site the actual age(s) and gender(s) of the photo subject(s)? Wouldn't that data be groomable to improve the accuracy? And the accuracy's improvements could be plotted real time as the photos are uploaded, analyzed, tagged by the user by what is actually correct, and then displaying that real time in a dashboard?

It never got my exact age, but very close. It averaged 23 years and I am 25 almost 26. It was way off though when I was with other people. Especially when I was with my husband. We haven't been doing too well, so I wonder if the stress and anxiety shows in my face which makes it calculate a higher age. Overall, very good!

Pretty cool, but still very flawed. It seems to vastly overestimate the age if the subjects are wearing certain types of glasses. It might help if you can get it to recognize glasses and ignore the glasses so that it only looks at the face itself.

I'm wondering how the machine "learns" when no opportunity for corrective data is offered... both gender and age were WILDLY off for well over a dozen photos I tried... I am an actress in my mid-40s who is regularly cast as mid-30s, and yet your analysis regularly put me in my late 50s or even 60s (hilarious!), and consistently identified my son as a girl.

I think it uses the gps of the where the photo was up loaded against the imbeded data of the photo itself to locate where you live. From that data they can find out where you might live and from that get a list of people who live there. Knowing the ages of the people who live there (according to public records) they can narrow down the age choices of the person in the photo. I think photos with geo tags outside of your residence are just random guesses.

I tried it on a picture of myself. It said I looked 57... that is only 2 years younger than my parents. And 26 years older than I am. This also told my friend that her 3 month old was 3 years old... great concept but still needs work... alot of work.

I thought that this was a fun way to just see how old I looked. I used my own pic from 2 years back, and I got 38, back then, I was 56. You should have users click on the face if the guess is plus or minus some number, e.g. one year, and use this to improve your algorithm.

It definitely isn't very accurate. I used a picture of myself and my two kids from last summer, I was 29, my son was 3, and my daughter was almost 1. It told me I was 45, it said my 3 year old son was a 22 year old female and it didn't detect an age for her. I tried a few photos of myself, and the ages ranged from 28-45.

Lol....I don't have any complaints. On an older passport sized photo of me it had me at 11 years younger than my age at the time , and on a recent full frontal selfie I am 14 years younger. I've always been told by humans that I look way younger than my age so, I'm thrilled to know that the robot sees the me same way :)

Too funny :) Got my gender correct, but I'm 45 at it guessed 86, when most people say I don't even look like I've hit 40. I put in a younger picture of myself, less pixelated and it was way more accurate.

Good attempt to solve a complex problem. I noticed few things.If the face is blurred, the algorithm tends to give a smaller value of for age,it seems to be doing the same if the image is blurred and lay in the background of a clearer pic thats in focus.

You just uploaded your face, and maybe the face of others without their consent since you used a grop photo, to an engine which uses facial recognition. What then happens, your face is added to a database. Oh, yes, I forgot, they "told" you they don't keep photos. Uh.. ok.. yeah.. ask Snapchat and others about that "truth" of these systems and disposing of images. Why would you want you face added to a database - with your IP and likely some other small details - for future facial recognition by one of the largest companies around; Microsoft. Use some judgement people. Social media has you believing in the giving away of any of your data - including your image - just because someone asked for it. People are such social lemmings anymore.

The algorithm predicted my age to be 61. I am 74. Actually, most people think I'm 10+years younger than my age. In a photo with my wife it judged me to be 60 and her to be 49. I am actually 10 years older than her. Amazing.

I'm afraid your system isn't very accurate. I tested a lot of pictures. For myself the guesses ranged from 70 to 40. I have a friend over 60, who in my opinion looks over 60 and you guessed her at 35. I don't see much accuracy.

well, i tested you, put the same photo twice, only one copy had lighted hair to almost white, the rest of photo was lighted a little bit. The lighter photo got 72!!! the other photo got 34, i am 55. Need to do some improving :-)

It's really interesting but hilarious!
It performs poorly on Asian females!!
I'm actually 41, though it's true I do look like at least 10 years younger than I actually am, but this system never guesses I'm older than 20!!
Though I'm flattered, but it' far from accurate especially on Asian females faces.
It will be better if you let people key in their real ages after predictions, then the system will learn.

Yeah this gave me many ages, between 23 as the lowest all the way up to 46. My brother is 10 yrs younger and in several pictures of us together it shows him as older, i laughed so hard at his responses!

I tried different pictures of me with my friends and as what I have observed, wearing glasses gives an older result. My friend's age result was 70 (oldest) where in fact it should be 26. We had inaccurate results even with the gender.

It's the eyebrows! After multiple pictures of my wife where 'no face detected' came up, I darkened the eyebrows in a failed picture and the detection worked just fine. (I hope this information is useful.)

I tried 3 pictures and got 27 and 28, I'm 40. My 14 year old son showed as 23 and my 9 no old son showed as a 2 year old girl - in 2 different pictures. My 67 year old mother showed as 44 and my 70 year old mother in law showed 38! My husband showed accurately at 41.

Sharper features generally show up as being in their 30s, regardless of anything else. Rounder features tend to show up as younger, even with noticeable wrinkles. Also, size matters. Running the same picture of Arthur Rimbaud, but different sizes/contrasts, had an age range of 21-38 (he was actually 17) - a photo of him at age 13 showed an age of 44. Not very reliable.

It got my husband's age wrong though and made him older by 5 or 6 years. Oops.

Amazing stuff. The only photo I have on my PC was with my family. It was taken on my 45th birthday with my daughter and twin sons. ALL genders were correct. My daughters age was Correct, my sons ages were wrong - 1 was 23 and the other 26 (at the time they were 17) and my age well - THANK YOU 24!!!

Great fun and am looking forward to getting a updated photo to do it again. :)

I used two photographs that were taken on exactly the same night ... same location, same clothing, same everything except for different lighting. One said I am 50 and the other said I am 39. I did not set out to prove the machine inaccurate. I thought I was going to get the same answer. Just think you should know. Your new toy can't be totally reliable.

I just tried this for fun expecting it to guess my age as older than I actually am. I was pleasantly surprised. My actual age is 45 but How-Old.net estimated my age to be only 37.

Not only on Twitter, but also in Instagram (IG). I first knew about howold.net on IG last night. Tried that on and posted the result on my IG , which is connected to FB. My friends who saw my post tried that too, and overnight until now, my timeline is flooded with my friends posts on their how old they looked. :)

Yes I've done a fair few photos and it's extremely inaccurate most of the time, I'd suggest that people can type in their real age after the photo is analyzed to give the software some kind of mistake learning process by building up its experience?

Hi buddies! This is a cool program, but people need to be able to tell the program if it was right or not - if it gets your age wrong, you should be able to tell it what your actual age is so that the program can improve. Also, there aren't just male and female people - I realise this is hard to program for in terms of face recognition software, but it's certainly something to be aware of.

My mom's 60, but you guessed her 27 and male. To me, she looked more like a late 40 woman with short hair.

Oh, and my 18 year old cousin was predicted as 50. In reality, he looked 20-ish the most.

It seems to me that the accuracy of guessing the age by the program depends a lot on the quality of the photo and on the position of the face: when you keep your face a bit down, the program identifies you a bit older, and if you look straight to the camera, your age may be identified as if you are younger. I tried some of my pictures made on the same day during the same event. In the photo with my face down, my age was identified as 46, and in the photo made immediately after the first one, but with my face up, my age was identified as 31 (on the date both photos were taken my real age was 47).
I tried the professionally made passport photo of my sister, and her face was identified as a face of 32-year old woman (and she was 48 at that time!). Then I tired a photo of my son. He had beard, so the program "guessed" that he was a man of 34 (actually, he is 28!)
The possibility of an error is higher if the quality of the photo is lower, but the program cannot identify the face at all if the photo is more than 3MB (higher quality)!
I think this program is made just for fun. Don't take it serious.

I tried 10 different photos and it averaged my age to be 37 and I am 30 years old. I did notice that when I was in group photos with lighter skin ppl (particularity white) it would say my age was around 40! But when I was in a photo by myself or with other dark skin black ppl it would guess my age to be late 20s to mid 30s. Just thought you should know that the system may have some color bias.

It seems it would learn more if you could correct it when it guesses wrong. I tried several recent photos and its guesses were all between 32 and 45, which is a pretty wide dispersion. 38 was the most repeated guess. (Also, I'm 29, ouch!)
Think of how much faster the system would evolve with user input.

I'm 15 and female on two it guessed 88 male & 84 male. I thought it was hilarious but if you're looking for accuracy then it definitely needs work ????�?

I'm 34 (but usually get mistaken for much younger). Ran a few photos through, age ranges from 28 to 36 so I guess it's in the ballpark. Male/female was very hit and miss.
