Virtual Server scripting - take a look now before you need it...
Simon contacted me today; he was having a problem restarting a Virtual Machine under Virtual Server 2005 from within the standard interface. The message he received was “<server name> could not be started because one of its virtual hard disks is already in use by another running virtual machine “. This was a bit strange as he was in the process of rebooting the Virtual Machine in question! The usual tricks didn’t resolve the issue and restarting the service or a re-boot wasn’t an option at that point in time - is it ever?
My suggestion was to perform a “start” of the Virtual Machine via the scripting interface, which worked.
I guess we often take for granted there are two, three or more methods of getting a task done within Windows – this is a good example of being prepared to use others. The scripts for Virtual Sever can be found here, it's good practise to test them *before* you need to use them in an emergency!

I've heard of an issue twice now so I thought it was worth pointing out what may be the cause. ...
