Remote Server Administration Toolkit (RSAT) for Windows 8

Two important notes:

  1. Please note that the Remote Server
Administration Tools for Windows 8 can ONLY be installed on computers that are
    running Windows 8.
  2. Remove all older versions of
Administration Tools Pack or Remote Server Administration Tools—including
earlier prerelease versions, and releases of the tools for different languages
or locales—from the computer before you install Remote Server Administration
Tools for Windows 8. Only one copy at a time of Remote Server Administration
Tools can be installed on a computer.

Hi Julian, I was just as confused as you were when reading this post initially, so I decided to investigate. A couple of weeks ago when I moved to Windows 8, I downloaded RSAT for Windows 8 preview, but never installed it. I just downloaded the version referred to in this post, and verified that they are different files (the file is about 2mb larger than the release preview one) I am installing it now, without any modifications made to my system and so far it seems like it is working! Hope that helps

I installed Windows 8 RSAT and after editing a GPO using Windows 8 RSAT RTM, I cannot edit the same GPO using Server 2008 R2 GPMC or from Windows 7 RSAT. An error message reads: Windows has detected that this policy was created by a more recent version of Windows. You will not be able to edit this policy on this version of Windows. This is a problem.  I had to recreate the GPO for our global wireless access list.  So because of this I'm advising all the other admins here to refrain from using Windows 8 RSAT until bugs like this get resolved.  There should be no reason why editing a GPO using these tools shoud break backwards compatibilty.
