Visual Studio 2015 and .NET Framework 4.6 released today--behind the scenes goodies, t-shirts, and lots of open development
You probably heard that Visual Studio 2015 and .NET Framework 4.6 released today. Congrats team! This is a big day for us as we’ve all been working really hard on this release for many many months. Get the bits now!
- Visual Studio 2015 <— BTW, if you’re an open source dev, you get VS community for free!
- .NET Framework 4.6 <—Always been free, baby!
I had the pleasure of showing off the awesome productivity, debugging and diagnostic tools kicking off the launch keynote with Soma. That was pretty darn fun. I personally thought I was wearing too much makeup but that’s what studio people make you do ;-). Amanda Silver and Scott Hanselman also joined Soma on stage to show off a slew of mobile and web development tools. Scott also touched on new features in C#, ASP.NET 5 and .NET Core which is our open source & cross-platform stack. If you missed it, definitely check it out.

By the way, I mentioned at the end of my demo that Roslyn (the .NET Compiler for VB & C#) is on GitHub. There’s actually a lot of activity on GitHub. Check out our repos and contribute!
- .NET Core Common Language Runtime – CoreCLR repo
- .NET Core Framework Libraries – CoreFx repo
- .NET Compiler Platform (“Roslyn”) and C# and Visual Basic languages – Roslyn repo
- F# Compiler and language – Fsharp repo (4.0 released today too!)
- ASP.NET 5 – ASP.NET Home repo
I have to say that this was one of my favorite Visual Studio launches ever – and I’ve been using Visual Studio for a very long time. What was really special about it IMO was we really showed our customers how we’ve embraced open source and open development. It’s been a big culture change for us and we’re excited for the future. It’s a great time to be a developer! Watch this short video on how we build Visual Studio, many parts out in the open. I am so proud to be on this team.

And thanks for all the encouraging comments on twitter! Sometimes, while I’m battling my nerves and trying to remember all the right keystrokes on stage, I forget how I may be inspiring other developers, especially young women developers, to do their best work. It’s humbling to say the least.
Oh and all of you asking for my .NET T-shirt, you can grab the artwork from the .NET Foundation SWAG repo as well as order stickers from sticker mule. And if you have more artistic ability than your average developer like me, submit a pull request and we’ll get you onto your own stickers too! (T-shirts coming soon. UPDATE 7/22: Order T-shirts here! https://dotnet.spreadshirt.com/).
What I personally found most inspiring was the app building our teams did for Humanitarian Toolbox (www.htbox.org), a charity supporting disaster relief organizations with open source software and services. I first learned about HTBOX from Bill Wagner, who’s also on the advisory council for the .NET Foundation. It was amazing to see many teams at Microsoft come together and use our tools and technologies for such an important cause. Read more about the project called “allRready” and get involved.
It’s a big day for us on the Visual Studio team. Thank you all for your support and for being awesome developers!
Enjoy!

We want to buy Visual Studio pro, and we were told by our reseller that pricing won't be ready until september. That surprises me. MS Store still lists VS 2013 only!Anonymous

@Warren -- the sales guys tell me that we will sell Visual Studio Professional 2015 (with and without MSDN). It will be available for sale via resellers and the Microsoft Store online starting on September 1, there's just a delay due to channel logistics.Anonymous

@Beth, it seems like the MS Store is selling VS2015 (www.microsoftstore.com/.../categoryID.62687600), unless those MSDN editions are still VS2013. We need the non-MSDN version, though. That's really not going to be available until Sept. 1?Anonymous

@Beth. Thank you very much. Sincerely. I've looked around and have found nothing nearly as good as LightSwitch, but I will keep looking. I wish MS would use it or lose it (Open Source it), as there are still a lot of people (including you, I believe) that saw the value of this product. Hoping for resurrection... :)Anonymous

We want clarification about LightSwitch. Asp net development is too slow. Store apps we do not need. Azure do not want our customers. Visual Studio 2015 brings only bugfixes. Now what about LightSwitch ???Anonymous

very good microsoft work with a universal platform for apps, but the lightswitch is not an app, I work with heavy processes orders / invoices / stocks, routines that does not support an app, an app supports a work front, a straight guard we need to have more tools, with a backoffice in lightswitch, I still believe that it should have a fusion of lightswitch and asp.net mvc. since asp.net mvc depends much code, and the lightswitch not. porfavor MS help us continue with the lightswitch.Anonymous

Hi Beth, Do you perhaps have any spare "How Microsoft Dodges Accountability on Visual Studio Lightswitch" t-shirts? Or maybe some "How to Deflect Anything with Evangelism-Apologetics and a If-It-Works-For-You response" stickers? Thanks.Anonymous

Beth - Just looking for confirmation on exactly which version of VS2015 contains LightSwitch. I didn't see any way to get it in the Community version so I assume it is in the Pro version. Thanks and love the shirt too!Anonymous

@MJDinMD - I'm pretty sure it's the same as it's always been. Install Community edition then install the Office Developer tools via Web Platform Installer.
