Azure Content Spotlight - More cloud growth in store for 2018

Welcome to another Azure Content Spotlight! These articles are used to highlight items in Azure that could be more visible to the Azure community.

2017 has been an exciting year for Azure!  From innovations in big data and IoT to additional data centers to a strong presence in open source communities, Microsoft's commitment to providing the best cloud platform is evident.  So what is in store for 2018?

Significant growth in cloud service solutions and storage is expected (NetworkWorld) though the leaders will remain largely the same with a 1% market share gain for Amazon and 3% market share gain for  Microsoft (Synergy research group).  Enhanced mobile performance and connection speeds will see a rise of IoT solutions  (NetworkWorld) and more investment on the edge (Whir).  Including Microsoft Azure Stack, 2018 could see significant growth in private as well as hybrid cloud (Forrester).  With all this growth comes increased focus on data ownership and many enterprises will require investment and best practice guidance addressing regulations like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The GDPR was brought in with overwhelming support in May 2016 and applicable to all member states of the EU as of 25 May 2018. As the GDPR is a regulation, it provides for an automatic legal obligation on the member states, so no new legislation is required to be drawn up. Despite the immense amount of hype and publicity surrounding the new regulation, it is apparent that many organisations are not compliant, despite the consequences for failing to comply with the GDPR.https://seersco.com/articles/what-is-gdpr-and-why-is-it-so-important/
